can't connect nuvi 50 to any pc

Hi all,
I wonder if any of you can help. I have a nuvi 50 and I can't connect it to any PC in that it does't "see it". I had a very good look online and found that it is a known issue with that device (nuvi 50) but I haven't found a solution as yet: the operating system (I run windows 8) just doesn't see the device, not sure if it is a problem with the Transfer Protocol or anything else, so I wonder if any of you guys is aware of any workaround or if it is possible to get a replacement from Garmin - I'll contact them tomorrow.

Thanks for that. I went through the list, most of it it's basic stuff that you'd expect your OS to do for you, like the device listed under my computer etc (by the way it's not listed there, as I said the laptop doesn't recognize the device at all), I tried the rest but no joy. But, here is what happened. I switched the sat nav off, plugged it in to the USB port: the sat nav went on as expected but still unrecognized by my OS (you'd expect it to get into "charging" mode after a while but it didn't happen, it was on and ready to be used even if it was plugged to the USB port), then I unplugged it, plugged it in again and lo and behold, it went into "charging mode" and the OS recognised it, so I managed to download the updates. This surely isn't normal though, I think I will still try to get a replacement, what do you think?

If it's now connecting reliably I'd stick with it.
