Dakota 20 - syncing Garmin Express & Garmin Connect

Hum, I sure wish I would have found this forum prior to buying a Garmin product. Having used Garmin GPS's many years ago, I decided to ask my kids to buy me an updated one for Christmas. I wanted something that I could use to record my hiking/biking/walking activities as well as provide maps. After reading what the Dakota could do (optional heart rate monitor and bike cadence), I figured this would be the ticket for me. I use Strava to record my activities and saw it will scyn with Garmin Connect. Another plus!

Now, after taking the GPS on a 4 hour hike tracking my route and elevation, I came home to load it up. But NO!!! Not a chance with Garmin. After an hour or so trying to get the Dakota to be recognized by "Connect" I find via this forum that Garmin classifies the the Dakota to be an "outdoor" product, not a "fitness" product.

Hello Garmin, why do you sell a heart rate monitor and bike cadence module for the Dakota 20 if it is not a "fitness" product? Why include these basically worthless functions on a product when it can be used as a "fitness" product? Frankly Garmin has a lot of explaining to do OR they need to make full disclosure in the description of EACH product it is NOT supported by Connect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
• Well unless it's specifically stated it'll work with Connect then I'm not sure what your complaint is. Note though that you can manually upload to Connect.
• Ok, thanks to Strava, I found a work-around using BaseCamp. Who needs Garmin Connect!!!!!!!!! ROFL!!!!!

Well SUSSAMB, maybe you should READ Garmin's own "propaganda" regarding the Dakota 20. HERE, I will quote it for you:

"Get Connected

You've been busy exploring and now you want to store and analyze your activities. With a simple connection to your computer and the Internet, you can get a detailed analysis of your activities using Garmin Connect™. This one-stop site offers an activity table and allows you to view your activities on a map using Google™ Earth. Explore other routes uploaded from more than 12 million customers and share your experiences on Twitter® and Facebook®. Getting started is easy, so get out there, explore and share."

As you can see, GARMIN LIED and states false information on their own site regarding this product. SHAME on Garmin for stooping so low to sell a product. It kind of makes one wonder what else they lie about!

Now do you what my compliant is about???????
• As I said, you can manually upload to Connect. What you can't do is automatically sync and I don't see that claimed anywhere in the part you quote.

Yes, Basecamp will work, it's mainly what I use ...
• Well, you have your opinion and I have mine. However, Garmin state "simple" meaning automatic (?) which Connect tries to tell you it can be done using Express. Nowhere does it give instructions on manually uploading (NOT simple compared to automatic) the files, not in the manual, not on Connect. But, if one searches the internet and read enough complains, a Mod will disclose the secret not-so-simple other method for getting the info into Connect through the backdoor.

Like I said, who needs Connect when there is another site that can upload the files from Garmin devices as well as their competitors! :)

Please, if you would, tell me how to manually upload data from a garmin device. Garmin express fails miserably with my Forerunner XT310, which is by way supported. Their old ANT agent worked fine but they made it obsolete with a new software that doesn't work. Reading the forums I am certainly not the only one who has had problems with it.
• Hi,

I've been using the Dakota 20 for several years - it's a great product that has helped me explore much of Hong Kong's rural and countryside areas. Originally (back in 2011) I uploaded data to Garmin Connect but quickly found that ridewithgps.com is a much better site for creating tracks and for storing and viewing data. Yesterday I tried the new look GC site but without much success. Issues as follows:

1. Successfully installed Garmin Express on my Windows 8 Surface Pro. Used Garmin Express to install two software updates on my Dakota. BUT...
2. Garmin Express cannot upload data from the Dakota to Garmin Connect. Any ideas why not?
3. I did manually update data from my Dakota using the new look GC (MGRICCIO, to answer your question for a Dakota, go to Activities; go to "import" which is on the far right; browse for the file you want and hit "upload activities from file" - I do not know if it would work in the same way for the XT310) BUT the distance and speed data did not upload. It shows as 0.01 miles and no speed or pace data. The very same file uploads perfectly to ridewithgps.com showing all the relevant data.

What is strange is that when I used GC with the Dakota back in 2011 and 2012, it was possible to upload all the data including the distance and speed data. My records from 2011 show that.

Any ideas anyone as to why GC does not work with the Dakota any more.
• Thanks ADVENTURERHK for the site, ridewithgps.com. I will take a look.

Garmin's attempt to get people to buy a fitness product in addition to their outdoor product??? Or they are trying to keep up with the better sites and had to skimp on the programming eliminating half of their product user base. Oh well, the users they left behind will move on, . . . to their competitors! LOL!

Go into Activities and click on the Import link. There is more detail on Connect here http://connect.garmin.com/en-US/help/how-to/

nice reply SUSSAMB, nothing like pointing to nothing! "It's there somewhere (I think), you find it!" LOL

[email protected], not to step on the mods toes but what I have found (couldn't find it on Connect but did none Strava) is you have to download your activity into another program (Basecamp for me), then Export the GXP file to your computer and then importing it to Connect (or Strava in my case). I believe this is what you have to do but I will not use Connect as I will stick with Strava. So, with your device, you may have to find another way (SUSSAMB obviously doesn't know otherwise he/she would have gave you specific instructions rather than pointing you to the Garmin nonsense How to site).

Yup, sure is "simple" according Garmin!!!
