Not finding Serial Number or Garmin Servers

Garmin Express is installed. I click on Get Started, it searches and finds the 2555LMT rather quickly. The screen says Device Found in the upper left and the center of the box says Loading device information. It does that for about two minutes, then it times out. The screen still says Device Found in the upper left, but in the center it has three grayed out devices with a question mark over them and beside that it says nuvi 2555, below that it says Serial Number: , below that it says there was an problem communicating with the Garmin Servers.

The serial number field is entirely blank.

I've gone through the FAQ on this error and it didn't help.

I've browsed to the garmin server test site and can connect to it. (Something like omt.garmin.com, I found it in a forum thread)

I've rebooted everything, I've turned the unit on and let it connect to satellites, I've uninstalled and reinstalled Garmin Express.
  • Try deleting GarminDevice.xml file from the Garmin folder. Then disconnect from PC and reboot the device. Switch off then reconnect and try again.

    SOLVED

I called Tech Support. The tech tried several things. It wound up being related to the account that the Garmin Core Update Service was running under, or rather a selected option. When I ran Garmin Express for the first time it asked what Windows User account to run under and I selected the top choice which was the account I was logged in as. This part was fine but there was an option just below that that said 'Protect my computer from.....' which was checked by default. When the tech removed the account info from Garmin Core Update Service it forced that question to pop back up. He selected the same account that I had selected but he unchecked the 'Protect my computer from....' option.
