As soon as I open the installer i get "Garmin Express has stopped working. Looking for solutions" and it crashes.

I have tried compatibility settings and running as administrator, but no effect.

I am running windows 8 64 bit.

I have same issue. Installer crashes immediately when opened with error above. Windows 7 32 bit.

I've not used garmin connect for a while due to injury. The communicator plugin worked fine previously. Is it possible to continue to use this rather than new software?
  • We have had a few reports of Garmin Express crashing when running the program after the installation. We are currently collecting data for the engineers regarding this issue. It might be related to Windows User Interface applications like StarDock's or CursorFX altering a Windows file used by other applications such as Express. Other than uninstalling any Windows User Interface modification applications and trying again we have no solution at this time. As soon as a solution identified, an update will be released for Garmin Express.

Ditto. I have had my Nuvi 50LM for 2 years. I finally moved, got a new computer and want to update my maps. So I get to the Garmin site to download Garmin Express. It downloads but will not install. When I click on the garmin.exe icon...it says there is a problem, I try to detect it with windows but nothing comes up. I have deleted and tried several times. It does download all the way but it won't run. I saw another thread that says this might be a known issue. I have two Garmin Nuvi 50LM and would like to finally get the maps updated as we are in a new state. Any info would be appreciated.
I have an HP Envy with Windows 8.1; Intel Core i5-3230M processor; 8.0 gb ram; 64b x64 system; (It's only a year old)

    Here is the signature code:

  • Try locating the GarminExpress.exe icon in the Downloads folder, right click on it, and choose Run as Administrator. This has worked for a few others with Windows 8.1 64bit.

    Update for above post:

Here is the reply from Garmin Support. None of these items worked for me. I am running W7 64bit with all windows updates installed.

Garmin Express connects to the Internet to download software and map updates for GPS devices. Internet connectivity and network connection issues can cause problems in Garmin Express. This can manifest as:
    • "There was a problem downloading the update" error messages
    • No visible progress over time
    • Progress periodically reverting to an earlier value
    If this occurs:
    • Ensure that the Internet connection meets the system requirements for Garmin Express. A high-speed Internet connection is required. Garmin Express is not intended to be used with mobile broadband (such as MiFi, AirCard, or cell phone tethering), satellite, fixed wireless, or dial-up Internet connections
    • If applicable, disable any VPN (Virtual Private Network) or proxy that is in use. If this is not possible, use a different computer and/or network connection
    • Disable any third-party firewall in use, or else add an exception for Garmin Express. It is not necessary to disable the built-in firewalls in Windows or Mac OS X
    • If using WiFi, disable WiFi and connect the computer directly to the modem using an Ethernet cable
If the issue persists, adjust the computer's LAN settings:
    Windows:
    1. Press the Windows key on the keyboard
    2. Type Internet Options
    3. Press Enter
    4. Click the Connections tab
    5. Click LAN Settings
    6. Select the box "Automatically detect settings"1
    7. Clear any boxes for use of a proxy server
    8. Click OK, then OK again
The map update can also fail to progress if the time and date are not set correctly on the computer. To correct this, adjust the clock on the computer to the correct date and time.
    Windows:
    1. Right-click the clock on the lower right-hand corner of the taskbar
    2. Click Adjust date/time
    3. Click Change date and time
    4. Adjust the clock to the correct setting
    5. Click OK
After the settings have been changed, run the update in Garmin Express again. The update should now progress normally.

I also have a computer W7 64bit with no windows updates installed. I tried to install Express on this computer and got the "Failed" error so I did the .NET Framework repair tool. for some reason the repair tool took out my internet connection so I had to download the driver for my Broadcom Ethernet device. I had to do this twice. After the first .NET repair I had to do a system restore to get back on the internet and I then did the 2nd .NET repair tool and it took out the driver again so I got the auto install file from dell......problem solved. Express downloaded and ran fine, sooooooooo I am guessing that this problem is a windows update issue.

I can wait for the fix since I have a second computer that works.

As soon as I open the installer i get "Garmin Express has stopped working. Looking for solutions" and it crashes.

I have tried compatibility settings and running as administrator, but no effect.

    I am running windows 8 64 bit.

I had a similar issue that I have RESOLVED. I looked in Windows Event Viewer and found this.
Faulting application name: express.exe, version: 3.2.21.0, time stamp: 0x5446b7d7
Faulting module name: nvdxgiwrap.dll, version: 8.17.12.6696, time stamp: 0x4d4a29db
    Exception code: 0xc0000005
    Fault offset: 0x0000282a
    Faulting process id: 0x21b8
    Faulting application start time: 0x01d03a1f8007c367
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\Express\express.exe
    Faulting module path: C:\Program Files (x86)\NVIDIA Corporation\CoProcManager\nvdxgiwrap.dll
    Report Id: c3ef759b-a612-11e4-9404-d4358302fbca

It was my Nvidia drivers that were causing Garmin Express to crash. If you see the same error, to fix the problem, go to Nvidia Control Panel -> Manage 3D settings -> Program Settings. Then click on Add and find express.exe in Garmin folder under Program Files. The select Integrated Graphics as the preferred graphics processor for this program and hit APPLY.

That is traditionally an error from Microsoft .NET Framework. Please see the FAQ: What should I do if I encounter a Microsoft .NET Framework error while installing or using a Garmin application?

Why did I pay for lifetime updates for three devices when garmin cant even get their act together so their updater will work!!! Downloaded okay but when trying to install it immediately goes to 'stopped working'. If I had known before what I know now about garmins, never would have invested my money in these devices!
