GE Will Not Upload Workouts (Edge 810)

A few days ago Garmin Express (the latest one) seems to have got 'stuck' trying to upload the datafile of a workout I had recorded on my Edge 810 - it just says 'Synching....' and gets no further (even if I leave it overnight).

Firstly, why in such cases does it not simply skip this file and start uploading the other files, and return some sort of error at the end of this process?
Secondly, how can I identify which file in particular is giving problems?
Thirdly, I have uploaded all files manually (funny how THAT works!) - how can I troubleshoot the problem with this particular file?

Having perhaps grown too accustomed to failures of various Garmin software, when it first happened I just shrugged and uploaded it manually. Now I find I cannot download new workouts to my Edge 810. For some unknown reason, the Garmin site *INSISTS* on using Garmin Express to download and upload data to and from the device. And of course, Garmin Express gets stuck trying to upload the faulty file, and never gets any further...... :(

Any suggestions?

I am sorry that you are having trouble with Garmin Express. If you were able to upload all of your activities manually, it doesn't sound like a file is the problem. First, please make sure that Garmin Express is up to date by following the instructions here:
How do I update Garmin Express?

If that doesn't solve the problem, I would recommend removing the device from Garmin Express, restarting the computer and then adding the device back to Garmin Express again. To remove the device, please follow the instructions in the FAQ below and choose the option to remove the device from Garmin Connect when prompted:

    Disgusted with this software!!!

First, please make sure that Garmin Express is up to date by following the instructions here:
How do I update Garmin Express?

When I told GE to check, it told me that it is the latest version (3.2.19.0)
How can I verify this when this page http://software.garmin.com/en-US/express-download.html gives **ZERO** indication of what version it offers? Are users supposed to guess? Is the version number some kind of secret that we are not allowed to know? If not, then please explain WHY is it not displayed on the page somewhere?

GE did not launch the usual screen where it syncs a connected device - instead, it told me to authorise something to do with gathering information for .net (or some nonsense message like that - I didn't bother to take much note except of the fact that it was not operating as expected). I refused, and killed the process with Task Manager (who knows WTF it's trying to do to my PC without my knowledge or consent?)
I then started the Garmin service manually (I have it set to manual due to past problems with GE) - it told me that the service did not start within a reasonable time (Error 1053).
However, when I started GE again (3rd time), it opened as it should have from the very start, and notified me that yes, an update was indeed available. WTF??
Why doesn't your software know whether it is the latest version or not? This is the reason the version number should be displayed on the page mentioned above - your software cannot be relied on to give users accurate information in this regard!
It then refused to download the new version more than about 80% - it just got stuck there.

So I clicked on the icon in the system tray, and chose 'Quit'. According to my understanding of the English language, 'Quit' means to STOP COMPLETELY. Not partly. So WHY, when I click on 'Quit' in the system tray, is the FIRST blasted thing I am asked is, "Do I want to quit, or just leave GE running in the system tray?" - If I didn't want the application to quit I wouldn't have chosen the 'Quit' button in the first place!!! FFS!!!

When I installed the version I downloaded it told me that it was version 3.2.21.0. So, imagine my surprise when it too told me that there was an update?!? Why is the page which is supposed to contain a link to the latest version NOT the latest version???? Don't you guys even know which version IS the 'latest' version?? More secrecy? Some other reason? I'm ALL ears......

This time it managed to download the REAL 'latest' version and I installed it (* see below). This is version 3.2.26.0 (or maybe this too is more misinformation from the site / GE, meant to confuse users?) No wonder your software is so buggy - apparently the programmers / web-page designers cannot look at three version numbers (19, 21 & 26) and tell which is the greatest!!

If that doesn't solve the problem, I would recommend removing the device from Garmin Express, restarting the computer and then adding the device back to Garmin Express again. To remove the device, please follow the instructions in the FAQ below and choose the option to remove the device from Garmin Connect when prompted:

    * So as to not waste even MORE of my time, I decided to COMPLETELY remove all traces of GE from my computer - just in case. This included:
    • The registry
    • [Program Files]
    • [AppData/Local/Garmin]
    • [AppData/Local/Temp]
    • [AppData/Roaming/Garmin]

I found a number of directories named after previous versions of GE; obviously your updater / uninstaller does not do a complete job of removing these unneeded directories - but this does not surprise me. I deleted the lot of them.

Once I was reasonably satisfied my PC was clean I installed the version downloaded by GE (can't remember the sub-folder I found where GE had downloaded it). And, what do you know - it synced ALL my activities!

And today, after having had another cycling session - GE refuses to open, so I can upload my data. It just sits there on the blue splash-screen, doing nothing. The update service refuses to start again - same error as before. I'd like to be able to say, "What a surprise!".....

I've now WASTED a total of about 3 hours trying to get this stupid software to work. I am SICK AND TIRED of it - I've had ENOUGH of jumping through your hoops for your amusement, trying to get this faecal matter that you call an 'application' to do what it is supposed to do!! What the heck is wrong with you people??? For the record, I am NOT a beta-tester of Garmin software! Never have been, never will be!! I'm not running some exotic computer, with some unfamiliar OS; it's Windows 7 x64 - you may have heard of it.....

Yes - I'm ANGRY!! I've paid my hard-earned money for a device (which has it's own problems - but that's another matter), based on promises from Garmin to be able to use the device WITH the software, and upload activities to the Gamin site WITH their software!! I have the RIGHT to be angry - I have PAID for this right!!

I have had ENOUGH of your copy/pasted suggestions on how to resolve this issue - you completely failed to address even *one* of my questions!! Heck, **VIRUSES** are easier to deal with than this 'software'!! At least viruses are well-written, run on all kinds of computers, with all kinds of configurations, with no problems!! And that's more than I can say for the junk foisted on us by Garmin!! :(

    VERY annoyed!!
