Loading pre-planned routes, which GPS model?

Hello folks,

I am out in the market to buy a new GPS unit for driving purpose that is compatible with pre-planned routes. My current GPS unit, 13xx series, is kind of useless for the driving directions it offers. I have tried various settings so that it doesn't suggest me to go on highways for a distance as little as half mile to save 1 minute of driving, but it has failed me on all possible levels.

Although I can not expect google like directions from stand alone GPS unit, I can at least buy a unit that will support pre-planned routes, so that I can chart my route and upload onto the GPS unit before I set out.

Can someone please point out which models support this functionality?
