Gamin Express unable to update map

Garmin Express stalls at 18% when attempting to update to the latest maps on a 2597 LMT. There is no error message. The software on the PC and the device have been connected all night, twice, restarted in between, both, and the same thing happens every time. Both Garmin Express and BaseCamp claim all the software is up-to-date.

How can I update the maps when Garmin Express doesn't work?

You could try GarminMapUpdater instead of GE.
  • How much free space do you have on your nuvi?
  • and... how much free space do you have on your computer C: drive?

The PC has two terabytes free and the Garmin device has whatever space it comes with free.

Software with inadequate documentation and inadequate error response isn't a good idea for anything. Software dedicated to commercial operating systems, Apple and Microsoft, also isn't a good idea, at all. The first is a good way to lose cusotmers and the second is a good way to not get them in the first place.

Instructions for manually updating the device should ne inside the box it is sold in. The Garmin Express software is obviously poorly engineered and documented.
  • Express normally works without a problem. Where there is it's often at the user end. Are you able to answer the question asked ... how much free space on your nuvi.

Difficulty reading? The nuvi is stock. It doesn't have any additional files on it. It has the free space it ships with. Whatever that is. If it can't update as it ships - it's a rip-off.

I just tried the also totally undocumented GarminMapUpdater. It can't find the device even after a restart and even though Garmin Express and BaseCamp and Windows itself can all find the device just fine.

Does anyone know how to manually update the device? or just ask irrelevant questions about drive space?
  • You know it's quite difficult to diagnose stuff remotely, particularly when folks seem determined not to want to help themselves. If I was sitting in front of your PC I could probably have resolved the issue by now, but I'm not. Telling me your nuvi is 'stock' is pointless. I don't have your model, and even if I did I've deleted all sorts of unnecessary files from my 5 Garmins, probably have different maps installed and even different memory sizes (US 14xx models for example came with less memory than EU models).

As for not being able to update as it ships, in many cases that is true ... just like many cameras and mobile phones need memory cards 'straight out of the box'.

So you have a choice, if you want help start helping us to help you. If you don't that's fine by me, there are plenty here who do ... and get it.

The fact you're having problems both with Express and MapUpdater points to an issue somewhere in your system.

Assuming you have sufficient 'free space', then check your AV/firewall/parental controls etc to ensure the download isn't being blocked by any one of them. Also ensure you're connected to a usb socket (use the ones on the back of your PC) rather than through a usb hub and are using the supplied Garmin cable. If after doing these checks you still have a problem come back and let us know.

Incidentally also check your version of Express is the latest (3.2.22)and if you've updated at any time delete then reassociate your nuvi with Express, details here:

And those other devices tell the purchaser RIGHT ON THE BOX. The Garmin, the model of which is right in the first post of this thread, had no such information on the box and didn't even mention that a Microsoft or Apple operating system is REQUIRED for basic maintenance of the device.

No, it doesn't. The FACT that BaseCamp and other software is working fine indicates inconsistency in software engineering. If one can find the device and the other can't - the problem is in the software, not the system. Garmin is obviously using different methods of detection with different published softwares. That itself is poor engineering.

So, I just installed the WebPlugin, which only works with specific and UNMENTIONED browsers, and now the map in BaseCamp is mysteriously locked and to unlock it it goes to the WebPlugin in IE and that goes to a page asking for Unit ID, Serial Number and Product Key (without explaining what and where UNIT ID and Product Key are) and the UNIT ID box on the Garmin webpage is grey - it won't accept input. That is poor website design itself.

Assuming you have sufficient 'free space', then check your AV/firewall/parental controls etc to ensure the download isn't being blocked

You assume too much. The download is fine. The Map simply won't install, it stalls without error message at 18%. It's the installation, not the download, that is a problem.

Also ensure you're connected to a usb socket (use the ones on the back of your PC) rather than through a usb hub and are using the supplied Garmin cable. If after doing these checks you still have a problem come back and let us know.

Just so you know, the ones on the back of the PC are on an internal hub and the ridiculously short Garmin cable that came with the device is simply a standard cable.

Incidentally also check your version of Express is the latest

It`s all the very latest from Garmin, what is hanging on their website right now.

Does anyone know how to manually install the map updates?
  • You're clearly not interested in anyone's viewpoint but your own. With luck someone else may be able to help you. But just so you know, the Garmin cable isn't simply a standard cable, so if you're using something else because it's longer then I suggest you try the Garmin one.

What you are writing here isn`t helpful -

The problem is with the design of the Garmin software. I need to know how to update the map manually, not the useless information you`ve been providing.

Here`s an example from the Garmin website of how lousy it is:

    An Error Occurred:
/unlockMaps.htmNo saved view state could be found for the view identifier: /unlockMaps.htm

    Caused by:
javax.faces.application.ViewExpiredException - /unlockMaps.htmNo saved view state could be found for the view identifier: /unlockMaps.htm

    -- end error message

The Garmin map unlock server right there states that IT IS BROKEN.

I`ll be calling them first thing Monday when their service department opens.
