Error: "Unable to connect with Garmin services"

Can anyone tell me what this means?

I have two GPSes. I updated one with the latest maps about a week ago without any problems. I could not update the second, because I needed a bigger SD card. I bought one and put it in today and now I get this error. I noted there was a new version of the software, so I updated (now 3.2.22.0). I still get this error.

The only other thing that changed on my machine was that I installed last weeks' updates from Microsoft's "Patch Tuesday" over the weekend. (I'm running Win7 64-bit.)

I'm at a loss. I tried uninstalling, re-installing, re-booting, etc. Nothing. Is this a local issue or an issue with Garmin's servers?

I saw this thread that looked incredibly similar:
https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?149122-Problem-with-connection-to-server

But, the steps suggested there did not change anything.

I'm at a loss.
  • There are a few different things that can cause the "unable to connect with Garmin Services" error message.

First, check the properties of the Nuvi drive for available space, if it is in the red we need to free up some space. Let us know which device you have and we can make some suggestions on what to delete.

Secondly, if you open the drive you will see a garmindevice.xml file, if it is corrupt it can cause that error. Delete it. Then disconnect the NUVI and allow it to power up. This will regenerate another .xml file. Try the update again.

If it still fails we can have you send us the Express logs which may help in further troubleshooting.

Or you can go to this link for times and numbers of your local Garmin Support: http://www.garmin.com/us/support/

  • By "free space", if you're referring to the drive that contains the GarminDevice.xml file? If so, Windows reports that it is 991MB in size and 204MB is free. As an aside, this is a Nuvi 200W with software version 4.10 installed.

The GarminDevice.xml was syntactically correct, but I removed it as requested and rebooted the device. It created a new file, but I get the same result.
  • OK, thank you for those results.
I believe I may have found the problem. Can you remove the device from Express, re-add it, and try again. If you continue to have a problem please follow the instructions in the PM that I just sent you.

  • The Nuvi was plugged into the computer and I started GE to find whatever menu option you're referring to to see if I could remove the device. Much to my surprise, it did not give me an error message this time. It said there was a new update and gave me the option to install it. It's in the process now (said it will take 3 hours).

I didn't change a thing. The Nuvi has been plugged into the computer just sitting here all day as I worked. Is there a change on the server side or did it just start working for some strange reason?

UPDATE: The process finished some time later. The update went fine, but I cannot explain why it worked this time and it did not previously -- and the many times I tried during the previous day (rebooting Windows, re-installing GE, etc.). Very odd.
  • Yes, like I previously noted I thought I had found the problem, it was an issue in the database for that unit.
Glad its resolved, thanks for your patience.
