Upload a course using Express ?

I have found a CRS file, that I would like to upload to my Forerunner 310xt. But in Garmin Express, I can't find any option to upload a file. Is it possible to do it with Express ?

  • No. Express is designed to update software and maps. Did you mean to ask about Connect?
  • Thanks.

No, I was asking about the Garmin Express. But I can't find the option in Garmin connect either. The option to upload a crs.file to my Forerunner 310xt. Is it somehow possible to upload a crs.file from my computer to my Forerunner ?
  • Wondering where you got or created the course file? You should be able to import it into Garmin Connect and then send it to the unit.
Once you are signed into Garmin Connect click on the Menu Icon and select Activities, then click on Import. You should be able to browse to the file and upload it.

    Thanks Trish.

If you have the Forerunner 310XT properly Synced with the latest version of Garmin Express you can use the Export to GPS button on the Courses web page. The Export to GPS button utilizes the Garmin Communicator Plugin so you might have to install that to continue. It will send the Course file to the C:\ProgramData\Garmin\LegacyProxy\UnitID of your 310\Courses or New Files\ folder. Garmin Express monitors these folders so if there is a supported file, it will upload to the watch during the next Sync with Express. You may have to use the Retry button in Express. Sending information to the watch is much more difficult for Express than receiving information from the watch. I tested the course on an older Forerunner 410 and it worked.

  • Thanks for your help, but it still does not work.

I have put together 3 screenshots, showing that something is still wrong.

When I click "Export to Garmin GPS", I get the first popup window, that shows that it have found my 310XT. When I click "Send GPSise file to Garmin device" I get the notice "Your device does not support writing of the type of fitnesscourses". If I then click "Download Garmin communicator plugin", I get a popup that shows that it is already installed. (I have removed my Unit ID from the picture)

When I look I the C:\ProgramData\Garmin\LegacyProxy\UnitID of your 310\Courses or New Files\ folder, it's empty.

  • You need to follow the instructions below. If they do not work you will have to do a Master Reset on the 310XT. It is creating a bad GarminDevice.xml file when it pairs with Express. A Master Reset will correct this.

Please remove the device from Express, choose to Remove it from Garmin Connect as well. This will not delete any activities already uploaded but it will clear the Sync menu in Connect. Use the instructions below to delete any remnants of the 310 from the computer.

    1. Delete the contents of the C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\Devic es\
    2. Press the Windows Key + R key together
    3. Type this exactly, %Appdata%
    4. Click OK
    5. Open the Garmin folder
    6. Open the Devices folder
    7. Delete the numbered folder (unit id of the fitness device)

    Pair it with Express again.

The device should be identified as compatible with Courses. If you continue to have troubles, delete the device from Express, do a master reset then pair it again.

  • Are you sure the problem is with Garmin Connect? I've tried different formats of the track from GPSies without success. The .tcx file wouldn't get accepted by Garmin. A GPX track export got into Garmin Connect but has succeeded in crashing my Garmin Express when I tried to send it to my 910XT.

I elected to download the file from GPSies rather than send it via Garmin Communicator. Not sure that it's a good idea to have Garmin Communicator with Garmin Express.

Now looking at what I need to do to get my Garmin Express up again.

    PS
Avoid the hard reset. Not sure you really need to. If you do, decide to follow the instructions make sure you save the information. Rather than delete the files, you should be alright just appending Old before the folder name.
  • Communicator works completely separate from Express. The Track downloaded to the C:\ProgramData\Garmin\LegacyProxy folder which Express monitors. When Express syncs it pulls the crs file from the Legacy Proxy folder and sends it to the watch.

  • Thanks for your help, but it just will not work.

I tried to delete, install and reset, but it did not work.

The only solution that seems to work, is to download the track from http://www.gpsies.com/map.do?fileId=hihuwufulwxpkivg as a GPX track, import it to Activities, save it to Courses and then send it to my 310XT. This works fine, and this is how I'm going to do in the future.

    Thanks :)
