Full Coverage of Europe 2015.30 map update problem

Hello,

Today I bought a Garmin Nuvi 54LM with liftime update of europe maps.
I registerd my device via the Garmin Express.
It did show 4 software updates and 1 map update: Full Coverage of Europe 2015.30
So I did install it all and everything went without any problems.

Now the problem starts:
When turning on the device each time it asks to set a locale. But this is a smaller issue which can be solved later.
The main problem is: "Detailed maps are required for routing. No detailed maps were found on this device"

Which means the updated maps are not there.
Tried re-install but it did not help.
Tried using the Garmin Map Updater. Gave it the product key from https://my.garmin.com/maps/updates.htm?deviceType=automotive&activeTab=&in=true&ni=other
but it says "The Product Key you have entered is not a valid Produkt Key" (impossible since I copied it and double checked that no empty signs were copied with it)

I also did remove my device from Garmin Express and re-add it, and then re-installed maps but still the same problem.

So now I would like to ask for a solution. How am I supposed to update my maps and be able to use my device?
I would expect that an expensive device like this works with the official software it delivers. But seems I was wrong.

Isiajan

To resolve this issue I would recommend starting with this FAQ:
What should I do if my Garmin nuvi, LIVE, dezl, Camper/RV, or zumo device displays the message "No Detailed Maps Found That Support Routing" or "No Map Data Available?"

If this does not solve your problem, Windows may have been write-caching when you updated your maps. This means that even though Garmin Express says that the update has finished, Windows is still writing the maps to your device in the background. The easiest way to solve this problem is to run the update again and safely remove your device from the computer before unplugging it. To safely remove your device, click the safely remove hardware icon in your system tray and choose Eject Garmin Nuvi. If you do not get a notification that it is safe to remove the device, leave it plugged in longer and try again.

  • Your nuvi will ask for a locale each time unless you've allowed it to get a satellite lock. Once you do that it shouldn't ask you again.

As for maps, I assume you didn't make a back up before you attempted an update? Once you've acquired a satellite lock try connecting to Express again and see what updates it says are available.

    Thanks for fast reply.

Good to know about the locale. It's a bit strange prerequisite for setting locale but can live with it.

Nope no backup done. Didn't see any reason to, the device doesn't contain any data for my locations so only the maps were changed which should not be an issue as i thought you can always revert back to old version, but seems I was wrong.

Anyway It's a bit late today so I will try going out and acquiring lock on satellites tomorrow. Will update this thread in any case.

A back up would have meant you could copy the old maps back, however let's see what happens once you have a lock and a locale set.

Ok. This was eating me to much so I went out acquired the satellite lock and came back home.

The issue with locale is now resolved.
But the maps still do not work with same message as before "Detailed maps are required for routing. No detailed maps were found on this device"

Again I did try re-adding the device in express and re-installing it even but didn't help. Same with Garmin Map Updater.

In my section "Reinstall or Change Maps" I see only "Full Coverage of Europe 2015.30" which is probably the thing I need as I bought the device with Europe maps lifetime support.

So I am open for any other approaches. But for now I am really disappointed with the products update software :/

Sorry I didn't mention it in first post, but I did spend over 3 hours googling about this problem before posting my own thread.
And I did saw this FAQ and my case is the one with empty page in map info.
But re-installation didn't help as I already mentioned.
Tried now doing the safe removal as you suggested and IT WORKED.
You were right with windows caching it when I tried to remove the device it said for around 2-3 more minutes that it is being used.

But just for the future improvement I think it would be good if Garmin Express would prevent such things from happening or at least show a warning after successful update to be aware of this issue.
As usually when you see everything green and an "All updates were successfully completed" message you think its done and disconnect.

Nevertheless a big THANK YOU for clarification of the issue and presenting the solution. I am really grateful for this :)

... it's not really an Express issue, it's why you should always safely eject ANY usb device rather than simply assume you can disconnect it at will. Express can't prevent someone from 'pulling the plug' instead of following Windows procedures :)

Actually it is, as it should be monitoring the map storage on the device and inform about successful completion only after everything is finished.
It's the same with any file transfer tool where you see a progress bar till the transfer finishes.
Not sure in what language the soft is written but in java, python, c++, c# or any other non ancient programming language you have libraries for such things which allow to monitor the whole file flow.

That's why I am suggesting it as an improvement :)
