Problem updating map

Hi

I have a lifetime subscription to EU maps.

However, I can't seem to update to the latest maps, called "nüMaps Lifetime - EUNT 2015.20", to my old, but still working and useful "nüvi 1350". The first thing Garmin Express tells me is that I need to download the maps to my computer (Windows 7), and then use Basecamp to transfer to my device.

But after some time downloading, I get a message from Garmin Express that the installation failed, and that there was a problem installing the map to the computer (note, I did not want to install to the computer - I wanted to install to my Garmin device). There is not really any more useful information. I can see a lot of files downloaded to my computer, but Garmin Express just tells me the installation failed. Can I turn on "useful information" or something?

Using Basecamp afterwards doesn't really help either. If I choose menu "maps -> install maps", it tells me "No unlocked maps were found for this device.". No idea what that means.

Anyone have similar problems with Garmin Express? It can see my device, but installation of maps simply doesn't work.

Thanks,
Peter

If the installer is only providing you the option to install to a default directory then what has happened is a previous version of the installation was attempted that set a path as to where the install directory should go. Whether the install completed or not there was a registry key created that is indicating that the installation should go to the C: drive.

To correct this issue you will need to go into the registry. Please be advised that doing so can cause issues with your computer. I recommend backing up your registry 1st.
To backup the registry once in regedit:
    1. Right-click (My) Computer at the top of the left-hand panel
    2. Click Export
    3. Browse to the C: drive
    4. Enter Gregistry for the name and click Save

Once you have backed up the registry go to the following registry key location HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Wow6432Node/Garmin/Installed - in here locate the key that is City Navigator Europe NT 2015.20. Delete this key as it should be pointing to the C: for installation. After this is complete close out of the registry and try running the MSI file as you previously did and the new installation directory you select should work. If you are unfamiliar with using the registry or would like to have someone walk through with you in doing this I would advise that you contact support to help correct this issue.

Unfortunately the same thing happens. (You sure know Garmin products though!)

I still get the error with not enough disk space, even though I selected a location on H.

The minimum requirement for map updates is 13GB free space on your C: drive. These requirements do not take second hard drives into consideration so you must have 13GB free on the system drive C: If you free up space on C: you could select to install the maps to the second hard drive.

Hi - thanks for all your help guys. That's what I ended up doing. I deleted/moved a whole lot of stuff from my C drive, and ran the installation, and transfer to my nuvi-device, again. This time it worked! Then I deleted all the map stuff from my computer, and re-instated my C drive...

So, I am very happy to have updated my Garmin, but I think it would be nice if the map download/installation programs allowed the user to designate another drive than C.

  • Good to know you got it working.
