Nuvi 40LM not connecting when SDHC card installed

As title - with 8GB SDHC card installed in the nuvi, Garmin Express just sits in a loop trying to find the device. If I take the SDHC card out, the device is suddenly found. Any ideas?

Possibly a corrupted card or corrupted file on the card. Also ensure it's formatted FAT32.

Yes, it needs to be FAT32.

If it's a purchased map I assume this is in addition to the one that came on your nuvi? If so I understand (though I've never had the problem) that the best way is to start the process without the card installed and wait until you're prompted to install one.
