Can not add device on Garmin Express

Hi there

I'm from South Africa and I recently purchased a Garmin Nuvi 42. I downloaded the new garmin communicator plugin and Garmin Express. When I connect my GPS, the Garmin Express program detects it but I can not do anything else then. There is a little white screen with a photo of the device, the serial number, a add device and ignore button. I can click on the ignore button but not on the add device button. I did contact Garmin South Africa and they told me I must put in my e-mail address and accept the terms and conditions, then I will be able to click on the add device button but there is no place where I can put in any e-mail address. Have anyone had the same problem? I am really not satisfied with this as this is my third Garmin device and I have never struggle as much as this.
  • You don't need the plug in for Express, but it'll do no harm having it.

Next to the white square should be a green circle with 2 arrows in it. With your nuvi connected click on it, does it then find your nuvi and add it?

Is there any other message on Garmin Express like unable to connect to servers? Your description sounds like Express cannot communicate with our servers via the internet. Try the suggestions in the FAQ: How do I correct the Unable to connect with Garmin Services error message in Garmin Express?

If you continue to have troubles provide the serial number of the Nuvi 42.

  • Hi. Thank you for the reply. There is no buttons next to the window @SUSSAMB.

There are no other error messages. I have checked and the Garmin Core Update service is running.

Here are some screenshots. The serial number is 383014492.

Thank you for sending us your Garmin Express logs. It is clear by the errors in the log files that there is something on your computer blocking your connection to our server. If you have any security software running, please temporarily disable it or add an exception for Garmin Express. Also, if applicable, disable any VPN (Virtual Private Network) or proxy that is in use.

If you are still having trouble, check the computer's LAN settings:
    • Press the Windows key on the keyboard
    • Type Internet Options
    • Press Enter
    • Click the Connections tab
    • Click LAN Settings
    • Select the box "Automatically detect settings"1
    • Clear any boxes for use of a proxy server
    • Click OK, then OK again

  • Thank you Jason, I will try that and let you know if I have any success.
  • Hi Jason. I did everything you explained but still no success. I'm really clueless now.

It is also possible that there could be an application that has set up a proxy on your Local System account. Try running the Garmin Core Update Service from the Network Service account:
    • Press the Windows key+R
    • Type "services.msc" and press Enter
    • Locate and right-click Garmin Core Update Service
    • Click Properties
    • Click the Log On tab
    • Select This account
    • Click Browse
    • Type Network Service
    • Click Check Names1
    • Click OK
    • Remove all text from both password fields
    • Click OK
    • Click OK again
    • Right-click Garmin Core Update Service and Click Stop
    • Right-click Garmin Core Update Service and Click Start

If you are still experiencing issues, after taking these steps, it would be a good idea to either contact us by phone or use another computer.
