Edge 705 won't sync from Garmin Express to Garmin Connect

Hello everyone,

I have an Edge 705 and a Forerunner 110. Since I use Garmin Express (on my Windows 8.1 machine) I can sync my data from my Forerunner 110, but my Edge 705 won't sync new activities to Garmin Connect (My Edge 705 is visible and found by Garmin Express). When I try to sync new activities it says "connect to device" and you see a status bar. I have waited for more than 2 hours, but no result. It keeps saying "connect to device".

What I already have done:
- Re-install Garmin Express
- Hard reset the Edge 705
- Install Garmin Express on a Windows XP machine and try to sync
- Install Garmin Express on a Windows 7 machine and try to sync

On the Windows XP and Windows 7 machine I get the same error as on my Windows 8.1 machine (connect to device).

Unfortunately Garmin did not (yet) answered my support request from about a week ago. So I try the forum to see if anybody else experienced the same problem with synchronizing with Garmin Express to Garmin Connect. And maybe even better, have a solution for this problem!

Thanks!

    In Garmin Express when it is syncing with the Edge 705 click the Show Details down arrow. Express will show you what file on the Edge is failing to Sync. More than likely there is a GPX file in the Garmin\GPX\ folder.

    Also, check for and delete any items in the Sync menu in Connect.

    If you continue to have troubles, provide the complete name of the file in the Show Details error message.

    Hello Curt,

    Thanks for your reply. When I click on "details" Garmin Express only says "searching for device" (Dutch: "Zoeken naar toestel"). Below that text You see "uploading to Garmin Connect" (Dutch: "uploaden naar Garmin Connect"). The green status bar keeps going from left to right. This wil go on forever.

    Here is a screenshot of what I get:

    As you can see in the screenshot, I don't get any information about failing files.

    Can I find logfiles anywhere else to see if something goes wrong?

    Since the Forerunner 110 syncs OK I'm pretty sure it is related to data on the device. Use the instructions in the FAQ: How do I manually upload data from USB devices to Garmin Connect? to manually upload any activities missing from Connect then delete the files from the Edge. Create a new 30 second test activity and see if that will sync through Express.

    You might also re-enter your connect credentials for the Edge in Express. With the device selected click on "Device" then scroll down to the Garmin Connect Account section. Click "Change Account" and re-enter your username and password.

    As a last resort verify your hard reset is the same as the master reset in the FAQ: How do I master reset my Edge 705 or 605?

    Let us know if you continue to have troubles.

    Solved!

    Hello Curt,

    After trying some other things that didn't work I did the "Bill Gates" method: "Sometimes you just have to format your system and start over again".

    In the history directory of my edge there were files lager than 1GB. Because the internal memory of the edge itself is 1GB I knew the files are corrupted. So this is what I did:

    =======
    To ensure you’re working with a clean system, you might want to format the drive first. This only wipes the user partition of the device’s drive, not the partition the firmware resides in. Use the following settings:

    Remove the SD card as a precaution
    File System: FAT32
    Volume label: GARMIN
    Do not use the "Quick Format" option for this format.
    Use the default settings for any other parameters.
    Once started, this will take a long time complete, perhaps 45 minutes, so don't panic.
    When done, create a new folder named "Garmin" in the newly formatted drive.

    To install a firmware version: (Note that this will not reinstall a version if it is already installed on you unit, even after reformatting the drive. For example: If 3.1 is already installed, you must first install some other version, 2.9, 3.3 etc., then install 3.1.)

    * Save the appropriate GCD file to your desktop
    * Rename the file GUPDATE.GCD
    * Plug your Edge 605/705 into your computer
    * Drag and drop the .gcd file on your desktop into the Garmin directory on your Edge 605/705
    * Unplug your Edge 605/705 from your computer
    * Power on your Edge 605/705
    * Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation
    * Set up your data screens and operation preferences

    =======

    Thanks to LOOIGI (https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?33515-Can-I-recover-repair-damaged-Edge-705-files)

    After I have done this steps sync is now also working for my edge 705!

    Hi Daniel, My Garmin Edge Touring is having exactly the same problems as Curt had. Is the solution the same?
  • SheilaBauchop

    Most likely DANIELW84'S issue was caused by memory corruption over a fairly long period of time. I wouldn't recommend you format your Touring device just yet. Have you completed the suggestions in the FAQ: What should I do if I'm having issues with the Garmin Express client? When you delete the Edge from Express, select the option to remove the Edge from Connect. This will not delete any activities already uploaded to Connect. It is beneficial when adding the device back to Express and associating the device with your account. Another possibility is that the activity files on the Edge are corrupt. Use the FAQ: How do I manually upload data from USB Mass Storage devices to Garmin Connect? to upload the files to your account then remove them from the Edge. Any files that will not upload may be corrupt so make sure they are removed from the devices memory.

    Please let us know if you have any other questions.
