Garmin Express - disable auto update

Former Member

I'm a new Garmin Express user and after installation, I unchecked the options to automatically check for and install updates. I changed the service status for the Garmin core update service to manual plus I even disabled the task which was created in Task Scheduler but each time my computer starts, I get pestered by firewall prompts for Garmin update.

Why is this happening and more importantly, how can I stop it please?

Thanks
  • Try looking in your System Configuration, under the Startup tab, and uncheck Express Tray.
(Go to Start and in the search box type in msconfig)

    Thanks for the reply Trish.

If I do that, Garmin Express will no longer load when I start my computer. I want it to load but I want it to stop checking for updates unless I tell it to do so. Besides, if I disable the startup of the app, it will still look for updates when I start the app manually.

I think that Trish's solution is the best solution for you. There is no reason to have Garmin Express run at startup if all of the features are disabled. The whole reason Garmin Express is set to run at startup by default is to check for updates.

Alternatively, you can also create a rule to allow Garmin Express through the firewall.

    I appreciate the reply Jason.

I thought Garmin Express was also used for syncing as well? However, I've just purchased the 1000 which apparently has wifi syncing (haven't got it working as yet though...it offers me the option to sync but I have to sync via GE before it shows on Connect) so perhaps disabling the startup of GE could be the way forward.

However, my point is still valid....if I have unchecked the option to check for updates, why does GE still persist in doing so?

    GarminSelfUpdater runs, no matter what

Can anybody explain to me why my firewall reports that "GarminSelfUpdater (ExpressSelfUpdater.exe)" attempts to connect to the internet every single day, when I have disabled all program and map update options in the configuration of Garmin Express?
  • It appears that Garmin Express will still download application updates if the option to automatically update Garmin Express when a new version is available is checked but it won't actually install them automatically. The only way to avoid this is to stop Garmin Express from running at startup.

  • Its almost as bad as a virus, I've disabled every option even remotely to do with updates & unticked every garmin startup in system config & still get plagued by esu.
These people expect us to buy their products in the future yet foist this on us! Just as bad as the cell phone companies poorly written pc software garbage.
  • And your issue with this is ...

If you don't want it then the answer is simple, uninstall it. No one forces you to use it. Personally I don't see it as a problem.
