my edge 500 got a firmware update without my permission

I turned on my edge 500 today to for a ride. I just started it up and left it on my bike to initialize while I did some other stuff. When I got back to it a couple minutes later, it said it was installing updates. After it completed I found that I now have version 3.3 on my 500 which I really did not want.

Garmin Express still shows it as an update to be installed. I've been very careful with messages to not allow an update to occur, yet somehow I now have version 3.3. Most annoying.

Anyone have any ideas as to how this may have happened? I hope this is not a 'big brother' attitude that Garmin seems to be taking, and now I must be a drone piloted by them when I use their devices.
  • I've been careful not to click the install button in Garmin Express when my edge 500 is connected. Does GE create an event log so I can see when this happened?
  • I believe you'll be able to tell from the date/time on the gupdate.gcd file, IIRC that's date/time stamped when it's downloaded to your device.
  • Garmin Express creates a bunch of log files. On a PC they can be found in the C:\ProgramData\Garmin folder and its subfolders. I'm not sure exactly which file you'll need to look at, but I'm pretty sure you'll find it there.
  • VOICERESPONSE,

My apologies, my previous post was obviously incorrect.
In an effort to keep Garmin devices working at peak performance, and for convenience, Express pushes firmware updates in the background when a device is synced.

  • SUSSAMB--- there is no gupdate.gcd file on the device. Wouldn't that have been processed when I started the device and the update took place?

Interestingly there is a _gupdate.GCD that is dated 6/17/2012. I've been seeing that file for quite a while as it's in my backup folder for my 500. I've imagined that it's the previous software version from when I updated to 3.0. And it's in the time frame I remember updating to 3.0.

Travis--- yes there are plenty of log files, thanks for the path. In the CoreService logs I can see in some logs where it changes from showing my 500 with 3.0.0 to 3.3.0. However, I haven't found anything about it actually moving an update to the device.

I'll have to make some time later to look at them closer.

However, I just let Garmin Express install the time zone update. When I did that, I had to acknowlege a Garmin terms of use or such. Certainly I didn't get any of that if I did inadvertently install the firmware update.

I wonder about the "sync status" feature on Garmin Connect. It also shows update status and seems to push updates to GE. I wonder if the safeguards similar to GE asking me to accept the 'terms of use' are in place for the update of your device when you click in Garmin Connect.

note..... the post from EXPRESSCUSTOMERCARE was posted while I was writing this post. That is why the disconnect in my statements in light of that response. Also note it shows how long I sometime take to compose a post if you look at the timestamps this post compared to the one above this.
  • And thanks to Trish for the correction. Not quite what I wanted to hear, but I guess I'll have to come to terms with that.
  • The gupdate.gcd file is processed when you start the device, but it still remains there. But in any case did you miss Trish's comment ... seems updates are pushed to your device :)

Edit: posts crossed, you have seen Trish's comment.
  • Now to add further mysteries --- While composing my earlier post, I'd opened Garmin Express and told it to install the timezone update that also had been sitting there waiting patiently for my permission to install. Now the timezone update has a message below it saying "waiting for other updates to finish". What other updates?

If I try to close Garmin Express it tells me "Alert! Quitting this application while your Garmin GPS is being updated may cause unexpected results. Please wait for the GPS update to finish."

It's been an hour since I told it to update the timezone map.

I really don't want my 500 to get screwed. It's really behaved flawlessly for me compared to many other posts I read. I don't ever get corrupt or unsaved activities, nor have I had any of the other flaky things happen I've seen posted. Things like this worry me.
