Garmin Express + Training Centre

I still use Training Centre - mainly because it's got about 6 years worth of data in it... but I also use Garmin Connect. This works fine with my Forerunner 410 as Connect will talk to the Garmin ANT Agent. However my Edge 705 won't seem to talk to Connect without using Garmin Express... and if I use that, then I won't be able to feed the data into Training Centre !

Does anyone have any idea how I can continue to use both Training Centre and the new modern Connect ?

Cheers,
Phil.
  • It seems to me that all you need to do is get the .fit/.gpx/.tcx files for Garmin Express to the place where Garmin Training Center expects them to be. You should be able to write a script to copy the files, or better yet use a directory junction so that all files created in the Garmin Express folder appear automatically in the Training Center folder.

I do just that with my 800, use both Garmin Connect (and now, automatically, Strava) and Training Center. Plug the 705 in, and Express should automatically upload the track. Now you have two choices. The easiest one is to simply import the track into Training Center right off the 705. Your 705 should mount as a disk on the Windows equivalent of the Desktop (I use Mac OS X), and you'll find your track in TCX format in the History folder on that disk. You simply manually import the track into Training Center. (That's what I do with the FIT track from my Edge 800.) The other choice would be to export the track from Garmin Connect as a TCX and then manually import that into GTC. Travis's proposed solution won't work because Training Center stores tracks in a single file database rather than as separate files in a directory.

I don't have an Edge device to test with, but if GTC looks for files in the ANT Agent device folders, I don't understand why it wouldn't pick up files that you placed in there manually (or via script).
  • Thanks both of you, wlll your solution today Schinder as I'd prefer a method that didn't require scripting.

Sorry, I wasn't thinking. You want to symlink into the ANT+ Agent folders. I though you meant linking into TC's folders. That should probably work for an ANT+ syncing device (I've never had one). The 705 is a "mass storage" device, so Express (at least OS X Express) doesn't keep a folder of tracks for it. You'd have to try linking the History folder of the device itself into the ANT+ Agent location and see if that would work.
  • The Edge 705 would work with both Garmin Express/Modern Connect and Training Center. Since this device doesn't use ANT Agent, Garmin Express doesn't change the way Training Center interacts with it. Make sure Express's feature to remove activities from the device after a successful Sync is disabled. This is located in the Device section. You don't want Express to delete the Activity files before you can open Training Center and Receive from Device.
