Garmin Express - Very slow Internet Access Start-up : Windows 7

When Garmin Express is installed on my Windows 7 computer, the computer takes a long time to connect to the Internet (During initial start-up). After start-up, it appears fine. (The Internet Access icon in the taskbar shows the computer is not connected.)

Deleting or removing Garmin Express solves the problem. When Garmin Express is uninstalled, Internet access is quickly established during start-up.

Garmin Express also result in Garmin programs requesting approval during start-up. This problem is fixed when Garmin Express is uninstalled.

Garmin Express appears to be a buggy program whith undesirable behaviours.

Garmin Express Version 3.2.17.0 refers. Previous versions had the same issue.
  • Most likely there is a conflict with some other software running on your computer that is causing this issue. It is not common behaviour. You can trouble-shoot the problem with trial and error; changing what starts up and what doesn't in an attempt to find the culprit. If you do a search on msconfig you can look at the startup tab to see what runs automatically upon startup.

  • I installed Garmin Express on a brand new PC with only Windows 7 running. The exact same problem occurred on a different PC.

Uninstalling Garmin Express immediately fixed the problem. Garmin Express software is the culprit. Trish, I don't understand why you are trying to blame the issue on other software. Have you actually tested the problem? It is as clear as daylight that uninstalling Garmin Express immediately fixes the very long delay in the Windows 7 PC establishing Internet Access. After uninstalling Garmin Express, the PC established Internet Access within seconds (PC has SSD hard drive) after boot-up. (Look at the Network Access icon at the bottom right-hand side of the Windows 7 taskbar, next to the date/clock when the PC boot.)

I used two different PC's with different brands of SSD. Garmin Express on a laptop gave the same issue. Uninstalling Garmin Express fixes the problem. I don't experience any other software problems.
  • No delay on mine running Win7 and a host of other programs. Maybe the SSD is the issue?
  • The same problem occurred on another PC with a normal Hard Drive (non SSD). There is a delay in establishing Internet Access during booting. After the PC booted I don't note any further problems. Uninstalling Garmin Express fixes the problem immediately. If Garmin Express give problems with SSD drives, Garmin should fix the problem, but I don't believe it's the SSD, causing the problem.
  • Another problem not mentioned is the prompt to install software from Microsoft during every boot-up with Garmin express installed. This problem is fixed when Garmin express is uninstalled. This happened on more than one PC.

On another thread it is noted Garmin Express may block Internet access. Before the PC establishes Internet Access, programs using the Internet cannot start, and the behaviour of Garmin Express can be described as blocking Internet Access. e.g. Outlook Express & Skype cannot be started. When full Internet access is established (after a delayed period), all programs functions normally. Uninstalling Garmin Express fixes the problem immediately.
  • I use win7 64bit on my PC and don't have the issues you describe. I do have about a 60 second delay after startup gets me to the desktop before I can use anything that connects to the internet, but I had that prior to installing Garmin Express. I think Symantec Endpoint Protection is the main cause of my delay, but it's never been bothersome enough for me to want to investigate the cause.

If you configure Garmin Express not to start automatically, do you still have issues? At any rate, you can go in to Windows and change the order the programs start up and do some trial and error by removing some from the start up temporarily.
  • With Garmin Express installed, the following program prompts during every boot:

Program Name: "A tool to aid in developing services for Windows NT"
    Publisher: "Microsoft Windows"
    "Garmin Core Update Service"

I can select Yes or No, but during the next boot I get the same prompt again.

When Garmin Express is uninstalled the above program (A tool to aid in developing services for Windows NT) does not start during boot, and the problem is fixed.

This happenes on all computers where Garmin Express is installed or uninstalled.

    1. With a SSD an i7 Windows 7 PC start very quick, and internet connection establishes after a few seconds, and Internet explorer can immediately be opened. It does not take a minute for the machine to boot when Garmin Express is installed.

    2. Removing the tick mark of ExpressTray.exe in Windows 7 startup (msconfig.exe) result in the program "A tool to aid in developing services for Windows NT" not prompting during boot.

Therefore, I am still of opinion Garmin Express is the culprit.

The User Account Control (UAC) prompt that you are receiving is due to the Garmin Core Update Service not starting when Windows starts up. If Garmin Express is set to start on Windows startup it will try to start the service if it is not already started which is what produces this prompt.

The delay in your internet connectivity is most likely due to Windows trying to start this service prior to initializing your network. The failed start of the service most likely is causing a delay here so I would recommend looking at security software and/or Windows utilities that are installed on both computers that may block services from starting and whitelist the Garmin Core Update Service.

  • SOLUTION:

THE SOLUTION IS VERY EASY: UNINSTALL GARMIN EXPRESS FOM A WINDOWS 7 COMPUTER

I didn't experience any further problems (slow booting of Windows 7 / Internet Network taking a long time to connect) after uninstalling Garmin Express. The PC boots fast. No need to change firewall settings or remove anti-virus, or remove any other programs or make any changes to the PC.

When Garmin Express is installed, the PC has undesirable behaviours, especially during start-up. If I need to update a Garmin Device, I will install Garmin Express on a PC which doesn't have important programs. After updating maps, just uninstall Garmin Express software, or do a system backup and system restore to remove Garmin Express software.

The same issue is listed under other topics in the Garmin Forums. Garmin Express has undesirable behaviours, and Garmin should fix it. The fault is with the Garmin Express software and not with the user's computer. It's a shame Garmin doesn't fix this software.
