I crossed the border from England to Wales and my Nuvi 50 seemed to go beserk! I had selected avoid motorways and it would not direct me onto the A55. I wasted a lot of time being sent through country roads, (one particulary narrow road where bushes swished both sides of the car) Anyone else had difficulty?

The A55 is a motorway, if you have motorways selected in avoidances it will certainly route you on the side (B) roads.
The device is working as intended.

Trish - as one who regularly uses the A55 North Wales *Expressway*... It is a plain old trunk road (with green signs as is the norm here). Definitely not a motorway (which means it would have blue signs).

That said I definitely wouldn't want to ride a pushbike along it :)

If the maps are identifying it as a motorway (possible mistake) and the avoid motorways is enabled then the Nuvi will behave as described.

You should get a message if you checked 'send me a copy of the error report'.
