Garmin Express Installation

Former Member

Hi,

I have consistent issues installing Garmin Express on my laptop(s)

On my Windows 8 laptop (personal, high-spec Clevo machine) as soon as it opens I get a 'Garmin Express has stopped working' message and the installer has to be closed.

On my Windows 7 laptop (work, high-spec T430) The installation starts but then stops half way with 'Failed, Try Again?' displayed.

Please can somebody help me to figure out why it won't work and whether it is just poor software which is apparently causing these problems on two disparate setups, or if there is something fatally wrong with both my machines (which are otherwise performing their duties correctly...)

I'm an IT software professional so I can follow any instructions / investigations you think are worthwhile - just want to get this sorted ASAP or I'll have to ebay my Forerunner 620 and go back to runtastic

The "Failed Try Again" message can occur for multiple reasons. See the FAQ: Why do I receive a "Failed. Try again?" error message when installing Garmin Express on a PC?

    I tried those steps. Doesn't work :(

No Firewal or Anti-virus or other bits, all installer systems / .NET framework up to date on BOTH systems (one Windows 7, one Windows 8) Express install worked on the Windows 7 laptop until the latest update, on Windows 8 it has NEVER worked.

I emailed support but they gave me the usual canned response. I raised a new ticket and was ignored.

Surely there are some logfiles somewhere / event viewer records I can provide to support to help fix this - my Garmin Forerunner 620 is going to go back if I can fix it sadly :(

Thanks for the link, I'm still experiencing the same issue on this version i.e. Install progresses but hangs at roughly 50% at VisualCppRedistributablex86. System is Vista Service Pack 2 based and have been the .Net framework repair process and the various other ideas already shared.

Is there any other way to download the latest maps to my 590LM as i can't see me being able to do it via Express before i leave on holiday at this rate.

Thanks for the support curt, a thankless task i know! :)

    Regards,

    Jon.

A little warning in advance, the uninstall procedure I describe, can have the effect that other software will not function correctly anymore. In that case, you can download an re-install the uninstalled software again, this should always correct any (new) problems.

What you can try to remedy the problem:
    • Go to Start
    • Click on Run (or the search field)
    • Type appwiz.cpl press [ENTER]
    • In the software list search for Microsoft Visual C++
    • Write down or otherwise save the lines with Microsoft Visual C++ (this is so you can later download and install versions you need for other software)
    • Click (one by one) on all the entries you find, choose Uninstall
    • Confirm if necessary the uninstall (not sure it will give any messages)
    • After all the entries are Uninstalled, reboot the PC
    • After the reboot try to install GE again
  • A security update Microsoft put out on the 12th of August changed the way the Windows Installer functions. While our latest Express client did correct some issues for the installation, it didn't correct what is discussed in the following article:
