No readings from BC-10000 since Vivofit & Express Install

Hi there.

Have 2 Garmin FR60's collecting data from a Tanita BC-10000, uploading it to Garmin Connect and then to Tanita Healthy Edge software on two different accounts each day. Has worked flawlessly and is a super system.

Today installed a new Vivofit which then pushed me to install Garmin Express. I believe it has de-installed the old ANT+ software. Certainly I cannot see it anymore.

Vivofit working well and the new Express software and web console looks super.

However....when the FR60's collect data from the BC 10000, it uploads it to Garmin Connect (automatically) but nothing more.

Up until three hours back, it would then populate the Tanita Healthy Edge software which it has done daily for the last couple of years.

I'm somewhat stuck on this. What I have tried:

1. Swapped new ANT stick (supplied with Vivofit) back to old ANT+ stick that came with FR60. - did not fix

2. Checked Update level of ALL devices - as it goes they were all up to date, hardware & software

3. Have logged to Garmin support and received email to acknowledge.

4. Checked relationship between PC and BC-10000 and directly it updates perfectly - although a pain in the ass to do as an alternative

Bit of a shame this part not operating as should be as all the components look excellent and the new interfaces also. It is possible I have configured wrongly but I don't think so as only changes were those prompted by the Vivofit. It took the shine off my £120 odd quid purchase a bit but support from Garmin in the past has been very good so I'm confident a solution lives out there somewhere:)

Would be very grateful for help from anyone at Garmin or anyone else who has had and fixed this it or worked around.

All the best

Garmin Express stores the scale's .FIT file in a new location where it syncs with Garmin Connect. The Healthy Edge software continues to look to the old folder created by the ANT Agent for the file. Copy the scale's .FIT file from the new location into the old location and Healthy Edge should import the data.

    Windows Vista, 7, & 8 location:

    • Copy the .FIT file from the new folder FIT_TYPE_9 or Weight

    • NEW Garmin Express: C:\ProgramData\GARMIN\Core Update Service\Sync\UnitID\Upload\FIT_TYPE_9 or Weight\

    • Paste the .FIT file into the old Weight folder

      OLD Garmin ANT Agent: C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\Devices\UnitID\Weight

Instructions for opening the hidden ProgramData and or AppData folders on Windows:

    • Press the Windows key + R key
    • Type %programdata% or %appdata% in the text box
    • Click OK
    • In the new window, open the next folder in the path, Garmin or Roaming etc..
    • Paste the .FIT file from new folder into the old folder
    • Try the Healthy Edge software

We will continue to support using the Tanita BC-1000 health scale data with compatible fitness devices and Garmin Connect but Tanita will probably have to make the change in where the software looks for the .FIT file.

Hi Curt and many thanks for the quick reply.

OK I'm going to try that routine shortly. Your instructions look good and I should be able to replicate them but ok if I come back to you if struggling?

And just to check does that mean to move the file each time we do a weigh from the BC-10000/FR60 or means to move the file just once?

This is great for the work round but can I just confirm please that there is an active dialog/plan going on between Garmin with Tanita to put a proper fix in place?

What we have here are three super products that clearly can (and have) integrated perfectly for a long time and everyone benefits from that. But it would be a huge shame if that were not a fairly high priority fix for those folks who (like us) have invested a fairly significant amount of cash in these top tier products from Garmin and Tanita.

Not a moan but seems like a slightly dropped ball for what seems like a relatively simply data location issue.

Would it help if I also approach Tanita support with the same request?

Will come back to you soon as I tried the routine Curt and many thanks again for the support

Hi Curt, tried the routine you kindly sent me......got some of the way but not all:

Got to step 3 and indeed can drill down further as you described in the statement; NEW Garmin Express: C:\ProgramData\GARMIN\Core Update Service\Sync\UnitID\Upload\FIT_TYPE_9 or Weight\

At that point I see a folder called: FIT_TYPE_32. There does not appear to be any data or files in that.

Also I'm not fully understanding the next instruction 4. In the new window, open the next folder in the path, Garmin or Roaming etc..

I can open the GARMIN directory and see other directories in there. Do I need copy a sub folder, all folders, or a specific file from there?

Also can't quite understand where to move it to. Can see a folder called ANT on the same level as GARMIN but it just has two log files in there.

If you could guide me a little further Curt that would be great

Morning Curt, just a gentle reminder if you have time please - many thanks
  • The reason you are not seeing the folders is because you are looking in the vivofit UnitID folder. Navigate to one of the 60 UnitID folders and you will be able to continue to follow the steps.

What he means in step 4 is on one of the sections the next folder would be Garmin, and the other would be roaming depending on if you were on the %programdata% or the %appdata% step. Please let us know if you require further assistance.

Hi Albert and thanks for the clarification, makes more sense now. I had not grasped the two locations fully and had put the wrong search in the Win+R string.

So now I can see what I believe to be the right locations for the weight data from the FR60 and the Vivofit. I've attached a screenshot of these on the same page with the location string so you can check if I have it correct.

Certainly the 2 files sitting in the program data string are the correct dates for 2 weigh ins. But they do not have the .FIT suffix that I've seen elsewhere.

I have copied and pasted them and fired up Healthy Edge but the weights are not picked up. I checked both accounts in case I got the wrong ID but no joy.

Definitely I'm closer to understanding and fixing but not quite there yet. Many thanks in advance

Sorry for the delay, I have been out of the office. Express is simply leaving off the three letter .fit extension. You can add the extension to the file name.

Right click on the icon and choose rename.
Move your cursor to the end of the file name and add the .fit Ex; 62766640800000000065535.fit

Once you add the extension Healthy Edge should see them.

I currently send Tanita BC 1000 data from my Edge 810 to Garmin Connect and then have to stop Garmin Core Update service via Task Manager before I can upload to Healthy Edge Lite from the BC 1000.
Does this thread mean that I should be able to do it in one step?

No worries Curt....welcome back, we getting there. :-)

OK tried the file extension change. First I did it in upper case, then re-read your notes and saw it was in lower case. So have tried both and indeed added a new reading. Unfortunately it does not look like either worked as of yet.

Having said that I 'sync'd ' first. So that would have sent it from GE to GC (and I can see that fine) .... then logged into Healthy Edge but it still does not pull the 2 or now 3 readings in.

Have attached a screen shot of the 'from' 'to' locations and the three files with upper/lower case extensions so you can see if I'm doing something stupid.

    Thanks again

Curt hi again....just thinking on and probably not necessary once we have this part sorted but could Garmin Express and ANT+ software live together on a PC? Just thinking in worst case to move both sets of data to host apps.

Or indeed in worst case could I rewind back to ANT+?

Probably neither will be necessary once we have the solution....just thinking out loud. Cheers
