Garmin Express and/or Dynastream Driver packages caused computer instability

After installing the new Garmin Express software my laptop started crashing and restarting randomly (Windows 7 64-bit). While working the screen would go black and suddenly the computer would reboot. Upon restarting the Windows event log would have no record of an error associated with the crash. My only recourse was to guess it was being caused by recently installed software. Uninstalling Garmin Express and two Dynastream driver packages resolved the issue immediately. Of course now I have no way of downloading new activities from my Garmin 305 to my computer or to the Garmin Connect website. The old software worked great. Why did you ruin it? Without the ability to view my workouts the functionality of my GPS is greatly reduced. I cannot imagine buying another GPS watch unless I can trust that your software will not break my computer. I thought I had been infected by Malware.
  • I doubt Express has broken anything. While there have been a few issues with Express I can't recall anything like this. It's either the dynastream packages or something else on your PC.
  • Yeah, I agree. I've seen issues where machines start misbehaving once new software has been installed and those issues seem to go away when the software is removed, only to find out later that the HDD was dying or a memory module was bad. The software was just exposing the problem, not the actual cause.

I'm not saying what is being suggested isn't possible. I'm simply suggesting that there are other possibilities that would produce results consistent with what is being seen.

I am sorry for the troubles. Garmin Express is installed on millions of computers at this point and that is the first report of that behavior I have seen. Unfortunately the ANT/DynaStream drivers, though useless with the Forerunner 305, are included in the installation. They are used with wireless ANT Fitness devices.

A rudimentary suggestions would be to disconnect all USB devices until after Garmin Express is installed and then restart the computer. Clean off the brass connectors on the 305 cradle and the watch itself then connect the cradle to a USB 2.0 port on the laptop. Resume normal use and see if the behavior returns.

If you continue to have troubles you will have to uninstall Garmin Express. You can continue to use Garmin Connect Classic view to upload activities to your account. That process has not changed.

Thank you for the response. I am currently using classic (I did not realize that I could revert). Since the 305 does not use the wireless drivers can I install Express and then un-install those drivers? Will express work at all without those drivers installed? To be honest I think the issue may be a driver conflict. The computer has been rock solid performance wise before the Garmin Express install and after there in-installation.
