Garmin Express and firmware update

I've resisted installing Garmin Express mostly due to some posts in the Garmin Connect forum that indicated that GE updates your devices firmware without allowing you the ability to opt out of the update.

Does anyone know if this is true. If so, is there a configuration setting that will allow you to disable the automatic firmware updates?

I'm not keen to want my edge500 updated as it does everything I currently need. None of the updates fix or add anything I'm interested in.

I use both Mac's and PC's but assume both OS versions of GE have the same user options and functionality.
  • Garmin Express will check for updates for your device, but in my experience it will not upload the update to the device without you telling it to. When looking at Garmin Express, on the Updates tab, there are the Updates and Sync sections. The Updates section will have an Install button when there are updates to install. If you don't want the update, don't click the button.
  • Thanks.... might give it a try.

It does leave Garmin Communicator functional for the classic site and any other app or site that still uses it, correct?

Some third party fitness websites that worked with ANT Agent devices to automatically gather files are affected. Garmin Express stores files from ANT devices in a different location on the computer. See the FAQ: Why are my activities files not being stored on my computer once I have uploaded them to Garmin Connect using Garmin Express?
