Express - Edge 500 - Adding device issues

I have installed the Garmin Edge program on Windows 8 and when connecting my Edge 500 to the PC, the program recognises the device, shows its name and serial number, but then doesn't allow me to do anything else.
How am I meant to add the device? It does give me an 'Add Device' button and 'Ignore' button but will only allow me to select the 'Ignore' button.
Any advice?

That is unusual behavior. Make sure the device software is up to date. The latest version for the Edge 500 is 3.30. Use WebUpdater to update if needed then try to add the device.

Make sure you are a using an Administrator account on the Windows 8 machine.
