Unable to install Garmin Express on Windows 8.1, 64bit

I have problem installing Garmin Express on Windows 8 X64 - Keep getting error message "Service 'Garmin Core Update Service' (Garmin Core Update Service) failed to start. Verify you have sufficient privileges to start system services."
Have tried running as administrator but keep getting same error. Have downloaded latest version of GarminExpressInstaller.
Have tried :

In some cases depending on how the security software is setup along with User Account permissions can cause issues with what has been described in various posts. One thing you can try is forcing access to allow the Garmin Core Services to be allowed through to the internet. These steps may help correct some issues that you may be having.

1. Press the Windows key+R
2. Type "services.msc" and press Enter
3. Locate and right-click Garmin Core Update Service
4. Click Properties
5. Click on Log On tab
6. Select This account
7. Type "Network Service" in the Account field
8. Remove all text from both password fields
9. Click Apply, then click OK on the next three prompts
10. Right-click Garmin Core Update Service and Click Stop
11. Right-click Garmin Core Update Service and Click Start

but cannot delete password - next time I go to Log On password is still there
  • I am sorry for the troubles. Try a slight modification to the instructions.

In Step 7 click the "Browse" button then type Network Service in the "Enter the object name to select" box. Click the "Check Names" box. This will validate the Network Service name.

Click OK to close the "Select User" window then click "Apply" and "OK" to close the "Garmin Core update Service Properties" window.

  • Still having the same issues. Is it possible to still run Garmin Updater, as I seemed to be able to use this perfectly? If so, is there a site where I can get the last version?
  • If you have MapUpdater installed just run it, no need to get the last version.

I'm having the same issue, my old Vista computer crashed. Now I have WIN 8.1 on an Acer AXC-603G-UW12. Also, I don't even see "Garmin Core Update Service" in step 3.

I am having the same issue when trying to install on a new Lenovo, there is no "Garmin Core Update Service" in step 3. Anyone from Garmin care to advise?

    I'm having the same issue:

    - Cannot install GE in a WIN 7 or WIN 8.1 environment
    - Service 'Garmin Core Update Service' (Garmin Core Update Service) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.
    - I followed above instructions and get the following message:
Windows could not start the Garmin Core Update Service service on Local Computer.
Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

Fortunately Mapupdater still works with the exception that it changes the file name for GMAPDEM.img to D224800B.img, thereby eliminating the DEM map from my GPS. Fortunately changing the name back again restores the DEM data.
    Webupdater also still works.

As evidenced by a Google search installation of GE is a very common issue.
  • I'm having the same issue on my brand new Lenovo Yoga 3, Windows 8.1. ... e.g. Garmin 3.2.21.0 install hangs 2/3's of the way through, and errors out with the "Services 'Garmin Core Update Services Failed to Start' error of not having privileges to start services. I've tried most all the steps identified on this and other threads, including returning my laptop to the factory install (blowing away all other programs, data, user profiles, etc.), and running the .NET Framework Repair utility on a pristine Windows re-install. Checked to make sure the Firewall and Antivirus was disabled. Checked user permissions on important directories.

Also spent probably 18 hrs over 3 days in calls with techs from GeekSquad trying all sorts of traces, uninstall/re-installs of C++, and older .NET Framework instances.

dont want to have to choose between a brand new $1200 laptop, and a $500 Garmin re: which one has to go. Would like a solution on how to install Garmin software on a brand new, pristine Windows 8.1 laptop. (note: this appears to be the only vendor software unable to install on the system).
  • While I can't offer any help the fact it's the only software that won't install doesn't help pinpoint the issue. I have a Toshiba laptop that wouldn't run Basecamp ... it too was new and was eventually traced to incorrect drivers that Toshiba had installed. Found the answer on a gaming website as it was causing problems for gamers as well.

I've run Express on my daughters notebook that cost a few hundred dollars and there are no issues, it too is running Win8.1, so the problem will be somewhere in your laptop. Hopefully the Express team will be able to resolve it for you so you don't need to choose whether your laptop or your Garmin has to go :)

I have the same problem........"Garmin Core Update Service failed to start. Verify you have sufficient privileges to start system services."

XP Pro everything up to date. Tried everything mentioned here and on the web with no luck.

Does the Garmin update service depend on any other services???

edit to ask.........Whats the latest version Of Garmin Express. I down loaded right from the Garmin site and I have version 3.2.21.0

This issue is not as common on Windows XP as long as you are using compatible hardware. What processor does your computer have? You can check this by right-clicking My Computer and selecting properties. The processor needs to support the SSE2 instruction set which was introduced with the Pentium 4 chip. Older Intel and AMD processors do not support this instruction set.
