Why do I receive a Failed, try again? error message when installing Garmin Express?

Likewise, I cannot install Garmin Express.

My problem arose when I had GE installed on my laptop, Windows 7 Home edition, but some GE update did not install and I could not open GE until the install completed. I therefore uninstalled GE from my computer and now cannot reinstall GE.

I have spent hours checking and repairing Microsoft NET with the Microsoft Fix program. I have Windows ® Installer. V 5.0.7601.17514

I have tried the Garmin map update program which said there was 1 update but it could not continue. Message said it cannot update as there is no earlier version of the map installed.

So, now I have a Garmin numi 54 LM which I cannot update and I am going on holidays next week.

I see that many people are having problems with Garmin Express. Garmin should get their finger out and provide something by which owners of Garmin products can get the updates for which we have paid good money. I have paid for lifetime updates.

One other thing - where can I find the product registration number? Although I have my product registered, I only have the registration number written on the box by the salesman. Where do I find it on the product (NUVI 54 LM)
  • It sounds like either a older installation of Express may be stuck in your registry, or when installing the newer Garmin Express it's failing while trying to install the VisualCppRedistributable which is required by our application. At this point I would say your best bet may be to contact our Software support team via telephone visit our contact page for details. They have the ability to do a screen-sharing session with you and try to correct the issue your encountering.

In regards to your serial number - from the device: Press [Settings] > [System] > [About] your device [Unit Id:] number should be listed here. Which is basically the same as the serial number, we have the ability to look up a device by this information or convert that number into a serial number. When you get Express up in running the serial can be directly accessed from the [Device] tab after the GPS has been added.

I've just noticed that in my Mozilla Firefox web browser (I don't use MS browser), in the addons, I have a Garmin Communicator Plug-in 4.1.0.0.

What does this do and should I remove it to try and get Garmin Express installed?

    I've also found npGarmin.dll
  • Express doesn't use the plug in so I'd be surprised if removing it solved your problem. You could always try though.

In case the issue is browser related try clicking on this link to install Express

    Express direct link
