Garmin Express and FR70 Pairing

I have the same issue with an FR70. I contacted Garmin support and their reply was that the FR70 isn't compatible with GE and the problem will be resolved with further updates to GE.

I am now running GE 3.2.13.0 and the issue has not been resolved.
  • AFAIK the FR70 is indeed compatible.

Try the steps in this FAQ http://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/simpleCase.htm?caseId={600f3dd0-3e6a-11dd-d7af-000000000000}&kbName=garmin and also here http://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/simpleCase.htm?caseId={8a5f1480-ddf1-11e2-7dd9-000000000000}&kbName=garmin if you've updated Express recently.

    Garmin Express and FR70 Pairing

I recently got an FR70 and when I try and pair it with Garmin Express I get a box that says "The Specified Unit ID is Invalid" and a button to ignore. I've tried doing a factory reset of the FR70 to no avail. Garmin Express works just fine with my Nuvi via USB and my Vivofit via Ant+. I've tried both the Ant+ stick that came with the Vivofit and the one that came with the FR70, it doesn't seem to make any difference.

Searching around it seems that problems pairing the FR60/70 with Garmin Express are not unusual, but I haven't seen any solutions save to go to the prior Ant+ client which would be problematic as I have other Garmin products that use Garmin Express. I'm not even entirely sure if the FR70 is compatible with Garmin Express or not, there are conflicting reports in various posts. If it isn't, then I'd like to know so I can return it and get something else. If it is, I'd appreciate any help I can get on how to pair this silly thing so it's useful.

    Thanks.

FWIW, I tried un-installing Garmin Express, wiping any left over program/data directories I could find, and re-installing. It detects the Vivofit just fine, though I didn't actually pair it, but gives the same error when I try and pair it with the FR70 :(.

BTW, this is on a Win7X64 system. Currently the only thing paired with Garmin Express is a Virb Elite since it was charging when I re-installed.
  • You might want to try the procedure here

I have seen that page, unfortunately it doesn't help. Garmin Express does see the FR70 (as well as a Vivofit over Ant+), it just thinks the "Unit ID", whatever exactly that is, is invalid so it won't pair with it :(.

    Thanks for the suggestion, though.

May or may not be relevant:

Garmin Express wants to synch 11 items from my Virb Elite -- what exactly, I'm not sure, I've only had the Virb a few days and can't imagine what it needs to synch with your servers, it just lists "activities" -- but whenever it tries to there's a "There was a problem communicating with the Garmin servers. Please try again later." error. Doesn't seem to have any effect on the Virb itself at all, I've taken videos and transferred them just fine, but may indicate that Garmin Express, at least on my system, may have other issues as well as not being willing to recognize my FR70.

What is the Serial Number/UnitID for the FR70? I would like to have the serial number from the original packaging and the number as reported by Express when you try to add it.

In regards to the VIRB. The Sync with Connect Modern feature isn't completely resolved yet. Each time you turn the VIRB on and it acquires Satellites it creates a .FIT (Activity) file. Sometimes these files can be 0 or 1KB in size which will cause trouble Syncing with Express. You can delete the files or copy them to your computer as a backup after you have imported the video. The files are located in Garmin/Activities folder I believe.

I'm guessing the serial number is on the sticker on the top of the box: 2GD056954? If not, please let me know where I should look.

Garmin Express does not report any number at all. When I try and add the FR70 it pops up with a window that says:

    FR70
    Serial Number:

The specified Unit ID is invalid.

And gives me a button that says "Ignore" as my only option.

In case it helps, if I go to the watches' 'about' page it says:

    AVB2.100
    0000
    AID2.200
    0000
    ESN
    1340643
    HW REV
    209

In regards to the VIRB [...]

The issue with the Virb seems to have resolved itself. At some point Garmin Express either managed to upload the files or decided it didn't need to, as it's no longer throwing errors for the Virb.

Thank you for the info. I believe there is a disconnect on our end between the Serial Number from the box and the serial/unitid from the 'about' page. I used the serial number from the box to register the FR70 to your myGarmin account. Please try to add the FR70 to Express again and let me know if anything changes.

    Thank you

Unfortunately no luck :(. Trying to add the FR70 to Garmin Express yields the same error.
