Problem with Garmin Express popup

Hello

After installing the latest version of the Garmin Express application (v3.2.7.0), my PC (Windows 7), on a daily basis pops up a message asking to allow “A tool to aid in developing services for WindowsNT” to run. The file is in Windows/System32/sc.exe and the process is identified as Garmin Core Update Service.

Obviously this is very annoying so I emailed Garmin support and they told me "I have had a look into this error message, and it is related to your Operating System, this will need to be looked into by Microsoft as I cannot advise or troubleshoot this". When i contacted Microsoft they seem to think it is a virus and want to remotely logon to my machine to try to fix it. This sounded dodgy to me so i declined their offer.

In the meantime i found an article in the Garmin FAQ here support.garmin.com/.../case.faces (not sure why the Garmin support couldn't have pointed me to this) but I am not a technical expert and i don't really understand what this is supposed to do? It says "Select Normal startup under the general tab" but surely it would be set to normal anyway so clicking ok for that has no effect and unsurprisingly the problem re-occurs when i reboot. I don't understand the password bit afterwards, i already logon with a password?

Could someone give me some guidance to fix this problem either by explaining if i've gone wrong with the instructions in the FAQ or by an alternative method. I don't want Garmin Express to startup each time i start my machine, i would want to start it manually when i need to. I don't want to disable User Account Control messages for everything on my machine

thank you!
Richard
  • I really wish I could get my hands on one of these problem computers so we could figure it out once and for all. My guess is that something is protecting the services area of the registry (HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services). If this is the case, the problem is likely to be caused by anti-virus or anti-malware software.

RICHLAUGHLIN, if you have the time, and are willing, I'd really like to figure out what is going on here. I could walk you through the steps to try to figure out what is going on. Contact me via PM if you're willing to try.

I've read all the threads and I've tried the fix in the FAQ and it doesn't work. I understand the only way seems to be to uninstall this Garmin Express, but if I do how do I sync my Vivofit?

I have the same problem with Garmin Express, and I agree that the current solution of simply not having it running is a pretty terrible solution. It still asks for this clearance every time I start it up to do anything. I have Windows 7 Ultimate. The response that it's a Windows problem not a Garmin software issue doesn't fly with me, no other program I've ever installed, including Garmin ANT Agent has ever caused the popup so it's hard to believe it's not the fault of something in Garmin Express.
