Fenix 2 not compatible with Express 3.5.9.0

Hi,

I've just purchased a Fenix 2 and installed the latest version of Garmin Express and the USB drivers on Windows Ultimate 64. On connecting the watch, Express recognises the device as Fenix 2 with the correct serial#, but says:

"this device is not compatible with Express".

Any help/input would be much appreciated.

EDIT: The Express version should be 3.2.9.0 and NOT 3.5.9.0

  • It certainly is compatible. Have you tried deleting it from Express then reassociating it http://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/simpleCase.htm?caseId={8a5f1480-ddf1-11e2-7dd9-000000000000}&kbName=garmin

Incidentally latest Windows version is 3.2.9 ... I assume you meant that?
  • Surely this is due to the GarminDevice.xml file being corrupted?

Have a look (via Explorer) at \Garmin\GarminDevice.xml - if it's tiny (less than 4k bytes) - rename the file and restart the watch. It should be recreated on restart and Express should find it.
  • I use my fenix 2 with Garmin Express 3.2.9.0 every day - it certainly is compatible.

No such thing as "Express 3.5.9.0."

yes, sorry, I meant 3.2.9.0 and NOT 3.5.9.0.

    I've tried:

    1) Soft reset (via menu)

    2) HW reset (holding the light button for 15 seconds )

    3) Renamed (and thus recreated) the GarminDevice.xml file.

(BTW - I cannot remove the Fenix from the list of devices as suggested above, as it cannot be added in the first place, there is nothing to delete - I cannot even get into the Garmin Express interface as no devices are found and none defined).

Nothing helps, same error: "The device is not compatible with Express"

What a great piece of software!

Any input/help would be much appreciated.

  • Well as already stated Express works perfectly well with the Fenix 2, so there must be an issue somewhere in your Fenix/PC.

I'm going to move this thread to the Express forum for you, where the Express team should be able to help further.
  • According to the screenshot title you are using the Fenix 2 on a virtual machine? We don't support the use of virtual machines with our devices as they can have issues when mounting the drives to the machines. Does the Fenix 2 work when not mounted to a virtual machine? You may also want to ensure that the software on the device is up to date. You can do this with WebUpdater. Once that is done, please try Express again and let us know the results.

The reason why I'm using a virtual is that installation of Garmin Express fails on the host OS (Windows 8.1). Like mentioned in the other post, I've tried to remove the old Express completely using REVO installer etc - but it won't budge - I get the "Failed to install" every single time. I don't know whether the installation leaves a log somewhere, cause the dialog is not really very useful with the "try again" option that just makes it fail again.

The sync on the virtual now works fine - Garmin Express installs OK, and if I put the Fenix 2 in "Mass storage mode" I can both see the device as a drive and Garmin Express connects and syncs (you would think that the USB mode should be "Garmin" and not "Mass Storage", but there you go). Firmware upgrade also works so my Fenix 2 now has the latest firmware.

Any tip re the Garmin Express software - why it won't install on the host OS?

The only thing annoying with my setup is that I now have to have the virtual machine running every time I need to sync my device - unless I use Bluetooth of course (I believe this only syncs activities and not courses and workouts(?)).

    Thanks.

Same problem here - windows 8.1 64. Everything was working fine until this new version of garmin express. Now I get a message that the fenix 2 is not compatible and I must run map update, which then tells me there are no maps to update. I'm stuck in a do-loop!

We have recently released a much newer version of Express then what you are trying to use. Try to install this newer version not using the Virtual Machine. The current version of Express is 4.0.8 here is the direct link for download. "Garmin Express 4.0.8". Hopefully this newer version of Express will allow the install on your PC to complete. Once installed try adding the Fenix 2. If you get the same issue with it not being compatible I would recommend contacting Product Support.
