Express will not install - "Failed try again"

I have been trying to install Garmin Express v3.2.9.0 for about an hour. I have downloaded it using Chrome and IE. I am using Windows 7, 64 bit

When I run it, the software briefly displays a "downloading components" message, then I get a "failed, try again" message.

I have tried the following things:

Rebooted machine.
Turned off the windows installer service and restarted.

Run the program in Windows Compatibility mode as Windows XP (Service Pack 2). When I did this, the green bar got half way while "Downloading required components" and sat at this state for 15 minutes, seemingly doing nothing.

The fixes to the windows installer on the other threads are for windows XP and Vista, not 7.

I'm running out of ideas. Any suggestions other than "get my money back"?

Just tried to update my installation of .NET framework to the latest version. Rebooted. Still nothing. I have also adjusted my Windows firewall to make sure the app was getting through. No luck.
  • AFAIK there are no known issues with Win7 and Express so all I can suggest are the normal checks, some of which you've done. If none of these help then the Express team will need to intervene and may call for logs from your PC.

How are you running Express? Have you tried downloading the exe file to your PC? If not try that. Also right click the exe file and select 'run as administrator'.

When you do that where does it fail, and with what error message (if any)?

I have downloaded it to my PC. When I run it as an Administrator I get exactly the same response: Very brief "Downloading files" then "Failed. Try again?"

It suddenly seems to have worked. This is what I did differently:

I went to this website using Internet Explorer (Version 11, if it matters) : http://software.garmin.com/en-GB/express-download.html
I had the watch connected. I don't know if that makes a difference. I had previously tried with or without it connected.

The download did not automatically start (maybe because a copy of the installer was already in Downloads? I don't know) so I clicked Restart the Download.
Instead of saving the file, I ran it straight away. This time it downloaded the files and installed correctly.

Hopefully that might help someone else get going, but it doesn't exactly make me excited about Garmin software.
  • Well it's always worked first time for me, glad it's now working for you. I'll close this thread.
