Garmin Nuvi 255w SD Card issue

When I got the nuvi there wasn't enough space to download the European files. Only able to down load the UK and Ireland.

I bought a 4gb SD Card to extend the memory.

Now having issues with my Garmin nuvi 255w where it wont recognise my 4gb SD card

I have formatted the card to Fat32

I have managed to put a small file onto the card on my PC. The PC recognises the card as a drive

When I insert the card into the Nuvi the card does not show as a drive and therefore the file doesn't show either.

Any assistance would be appreciated

  • IIRC you need to ensure you're running the latest firmware to enable the 250 series to see a 4 GB card. Even if you are some cards have been known not to work in a nuvi, so next step would be to try another card. If still no joy the card slot itself could be faulty.
  • Either buy or try another one. If still nothing then I'd suspect the card slot. If you have never used the slot it could be something as simple as dirty contacts, which you may be able to clean somehow.
  • I had exactly the same problem. I found some suggestions on how to fix the issue in another forum. It seems that some SD cards are not all the same thickness. As a result, the SD card may not make a good contact in the slot. By adding a few strips of scotch tape to the label side of the SD card (not the contact side), the thickness of the card is slightly increased and makes better contact. When I did this to my SD card, I have no problems since as the card is now recognized with no issue. Hope this helps.
