Overwriting maps

I've garmin 3590Lmt device which has 8GB of storage on board. When there is an update say its 6 GB update I have to install the SD card. Why? why cant it just overwrite the current map? I never had that problem with my old tomtom 930T. I have to delete manually old map (gmaprom.img) from gps to make sure that maps installs there I've 8Gb micro SD card in the unit but thats not the solution (or the answer). The only thing I liked about garmin is Voice command and the worst part is It cant understand my voice (again tomtom was very near with that... I'm not native swedish so I have accent). can you guys make it so that I dont have to use my sd card unnecessarily?
  • When performing a map update the current map file is deleted to free up space for the new map update automatically, this is not something you should have to do manually.

During the Map Update, it may not be possible to load the entire map update to some Garmin GPS devices. As map updates increase in detail, they also increase in size and some devices do not have enough internal memory to store the entire update.Compatible devices, with enough space for the additional support files, will get the option to load maps to a SD card during the map update process.

    Overwriting maps

I dont know if its been posted before It probably is... Why cant garmin express overwrite the map every time I have to install new map its hassle of erasing the maps one by one from the unit. why not just overwrite the old one? And no dont mention about having the microsd.
  • Normally Express will install new maps having deleted the originals so I'm struggling to understand the question you're asking? You might also tell us which device and which map?

I'm using 3590 Lmt when I get new map updates after it downloads It shows the device is almost full and I should use a SD card. Its not that I dont have sd card but I want to have maps in my device directly instead. And no Express wont overwrite the old maps with new one I have to manually go into the device and delete images so that when it shows I have somewhere around 6 gigabyte free then It can install. I'll Make sure next time to save a screenshot of that.
  • Well that AFAIK shouldn't be happening. When Express calculates the space it should take account of deleting the older maps, and only ask for the SD card if, having deleted the older maps, there would still not be enough space. Which map is it?

Has happened to me every time since the beginning right now I am with 2015.10 the amount of free space in my gps is 415 MB of 7.17 GB like I mentioned when the new update arrives I'll post the screenshot.
  • I've just realised you started another thread back in March about this, so I've now combined the 2 threads. As Express Customer Care told you at the time, and confirming what I've just said, it shouldn't be necessary to manually delete your maps IF there would be sufficient space on your device. Are you running the latest version of Express? I assume from your earlier posts that it's CN EU you're updating each time?

Hopefully the Express team can add further comments and if necessary look into this for you, since as we've both said a manual deletion shouldn't be necessary and it seems in your case it is.

I suspected that I created the thread in the forum but it has been a while i havent been in the forum. The express I am using is V3.2.9.0. If the space is low then the old maps should be replaced by the new ones as for SD card it should be for say if i want to buy extra maps say australia or america that should come handy. when you update a 6 gigabyte map you seldom have plenty of space left in the device therefore when new update comes it should automatically detect the old map and replace it. I didnt had that problem when I had tomtom 930T. Honestly the main reason for me buying garmin was voice control so that I dont have to touch gps when I am driving. I've erased the device couple of times (factory reset)
  • ... therefore when new update comes it should automatically detect the old map and replace it.

We all agree that. Now let's see what the Express team say as clearly it isn't happening for you.
