Garmin Express won't sync with Forerunner 405

I've downloaded Garmin Express 3.2.9.0

I've got the ANT stick plugged in.

The Forerunner is not syncing automatically to Garmin Connect. (It stopped doing so on 17 June, at the same time as it stopped allowing Sporttracks to import from it)

I cannot click on 'sync now' in Garmin Express since there is no live link there.

Garmin Express says there is a Forerunner 405 and that its software is up to date, but when I try to 'add new device' it says it can't find one.

Is there any way out of this, or do I have to wait until Garmin sort themselves out?

Thanks for the trick! I also uninstalled Express and installed ANT Agent and Training Center instead. Quite an old-fashioned interface, but it works like a charm! :D
I'll wait that Express is a bit more stable to give another try...

Not sure if this applies, but I have the Garmin 210 and have Garmin Express. Sometimes my data automatically transfers to Garmin Connect through Express (the 210 has a USB cable that plugs into my laptop's USB port). The past few days it is not automatically transferring so I have to click the 'manual upload' button. I think that option is temporary as I believe Garmin wants to take the manual option out, but for now it's all I can do. A while ago a tech specialist had to remotely fix my whole connection! It was a 2 hour procedure!!!! I have no clue why it randomly automatically transfers, but now it seems like it's stopped altogether! Any idea how to get it to transfer the data automatically. I'm not very tech savvy. Would the previous suggestions apply to the 210 as well? Or is my problem something different than what the rest of you have described?

The Forerunner 210 is not compatible with the ANT Agent and was designed to upload through Garmin Express. The ability to manually upload your activities to Connect will not go away anytime soon but Express should Sync your data when it detects the Forerunner 210 connected to the computer. I recommend you make sure Garmin Express is kept up to date and that once an activity is uploaded to Connect you delete it from the watch. Once the data is uploaded there is usually no need to have it on the watch. Go a head remove all the activities you can from the watch then use the instructions in the FAQ: What should I do if I'm having issues with the Garmin Express client?

Once this is complete we will know that Express is up to date and that the watch is free and unneeded data. Let us know if you continue to have troubles.

  • If you were previously uploading data with the ANT Agent and had started having trouble after installing Garmin Express, delete the device from Express then clean up the left over ANT Agent data. Pair the device with Express again and your uploads should resume.

    1. Delete the contents of the C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\Devic es\
    1. Press the Windows Key + R key together
    2. Type this exactly, %Appdata%
    3. Click OK
    4. Open the Garmin folder
    5. Open the Devices folder
    6. Delete the numbered folder (unit id of the fitness device)

    2. Delete the contents of the LegacyProxy folder located in C:\ProgramData\Garmin\LegacyProxy folder
    1. Press the Windows Key + R key together
    2. Type this exactly, %Programdata%
    3. Click OK
    4. Open the Garmin folder
    5. Open the LegacyProxy folder
    6. Delete the numbered folder (unit id of the fitness device)

    3. Restart the computer

    4. Pair the device and creating a couple of short 1 min test activities.

Is Express showing a sync error? Have you been using Express for a while or did you just switch from the ANT Agent? Start with the instructions in the FAQ: What troubleshooting options can I try when my ANT enabled fitness device will not upload data? Let us know if you continue to have troubles.

I have a Garmin FR60 that I use to get information from my scale to Gamin Connect. It syncs just fine using Garmin Express but Garmin Connect is telling me I have an update for FR60 and that will not sync. I have tried it in Firefox, Chrome and Safari. I get an error "Sorry, we couldn't sync your device. Please try again. ANT+ Help" It only does this with updates.

I have a Garmin 310XT and I find that I need to do this about once per week? Any chance you can fix the bug that makes it necessary to do this on a weekly basis?
  • With my FR405, I can upload completed activities, but cannot download workouts or personal settings. One day last week, I spent over an hour on the phone with a couple of well-meaning folks at Garmin and they could not resolve the issue. I'm baffled. All I know is that it looks like the problem is between Garmin Express and the 405. I can send workouts and settings to my 310XT without any problem.

BTW, I ended up doing soft and hard resets to the 405 and deleting the device and re-pairing in GE during my support session with Garmin. No sync errors ever show up in GE.

Garmin Support, there are similar threads in the Forerunner 405 forum.

NOTE: As a test just now, I just did a "Send to Device" of my personal settings to my 405 and then my 310XT. The items to sync for the 405 are still listed on the Device Sync tab (even though Garmin Express launched and initiated a sync with the 405), yet the 310XT synced immediately. I then deleted the device folders (using the instructions above) and deleted and re-paired the 405. Still no success.

According to the Connect engineers, the Forerunner 405, 405CX, and 410 do not support receiving the data from the Personal Information menu in Connect Modern. The data such as gender, height, weight, heart rate zones etc.. would have to be managed on the device itself. The Send to Device link on these pages will soon be removed to avoid confusion in the future.
