Garmin Express won't sync with Forerunner 405

I've downloaded Garmin Express 3.2.9.0

I've got the ANT stick plugged in.

The Forerunner is not syncing automatically to Garmin Connect. (It stopped doing so on 17 June, at the same time as it stopped allowing Sporttracks to import from it)

I cannot click on 'sync now' in Garmin Express since there is no live link there.

Garmin Express says there is a Forerunner 405 and that its software is up to date, but when I try to 'add new device' it says it can't find one.

Is there any way out of this, or do I have to wait until Garmin sort themselves out?

The 405 should sync without any issues. What you may want to do is repair the device with Express. Delete the device from Garmin Express and re add it. See the FAQ: How do I delete a fitness device from Garmin Express? Once the device has been removed re add the device back to Express. See FAQ: What troubleshooting options can I try when my fitness device will not upload data?

  • Sorry, it's still now working. After I deleted and re-added the Forerunner Garmin Express did pair with it (although it calls it 'Unknown ANT Device) and uploaded a new 10-second workout to Garmin Connect. But it still does not upload the runs I have done since 17th June although they are all on the watch under History > Activities.

When I go to Garmin Connect and click Go to classic interface temporarily > Upload, then it finds and names the Forerunner 405. Then if I click on 'Upload selected activities' it shows the runs stored in the 405 up to 17th June but nothing since.

It is as if the runs stored on the watch since 17 June are invisible to Garmin Express (and to Sporttracks).

I am having exactly the same issue. The activities are on my watch and Garmin Express refuses to acknowledge that there is anything to upload. Classic view in Garmin Connect will only show activities I have previously uploaded, up to 19th June, and acts like there are no newer activities even though they are visible to my watch.

As someone has also commented an a forum for a different device, since the update to Garmin Express, the few activities I did manage to upload before 19th June were no longer visible to Strava, so I had to manually upload a file, whereas in the past after I had connected to Garmin I could go straight on to Strava and it would upload everything automatically.
  • If you were previously uploading data with the ANT Agent and had started having trouble after installing Garmin Express, delete the device from Express then clean up the left over ANT Agent data. Pair the device with Express again and your uploads should resume.

    1. Delete the contents of the C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\Devic es\
    1. Press the Windows Key + R key together
    2. Type this exactly, %Appdata%
    3. Click OK
    4. Open the Garmin folder
    5. Open the Devices folder
    6. Delete the numbered folder (unit id of the fitness device)

    2. Delete the contents of the LegacyProxy folder located in C:\ProgramData\Garmin\LegacyProxy folder
    1. Press the Windows Key + R key together
    2. Type this exactly, %Programdata%
    3. Click OK
    4. Open the Garmin folder
    5. Open the LegacyProxy folder
    6. Delete the numbered folder (unit id of the fitness device)

    3. Restart the computer

    4. Pair the device and creating a couple of short 1 min test activities.

If you continue to have troubles I suggest you contact us by phone: http://www.garmin.com/us/support/

Thanks for the suggestion. I had already tried that having found it on a different forum and it still did not work.

For anyone else struggling, the solution I have found that works (for the time being) is to delete Garmin Express and Garmin USB drivers, then download and install the old software, ANT Agent (version 2.3.4) and it works perfectly with both Garmin and Strava. Obviously, Garmin will force you on to the Express software at some point, so this is only a temporary fix, but hopefully they will have ironed out the problems several folk are having with the software by then.
  • download and install the old software

Where did you find the old software for download? Can you provide a link? - Thanks
  • I seem to have a different problem but also including not uploading data. Only in this case my old Forerunner 405CX which was a gift from my wife (her left over) does upload data from the divice to Garmin Connect, but the data from Garmin Connect never reaches the device.

I already gave the 405cx a hard reset, re-installed it on Garmin Express, deleted my wife's new Forerunner 620 from Garmin Express to prevent problems on that side, but nothing seems to work. Stranges thing is: it worked until last thursday. The first day my wife was able to sync her Forerunner 620. On her own account.(Monique Fasol), but on the same computer. The only thing I managed to acquire was the change in name. Last few days it was an unknown ANT device, now it is again recognized as a Forerunner 450cx.

And as you will problably have noticed, we're no native speakers. Pardon me.

I have the same issue as Ron above: I can easily send sync info from my 405cx to Connect (via Express), but NOT from Connect TO my device. Whe I add workout (for example) to the queue and ask the sync, it opens Express, but only sync TO Connect, not FROM Connect.
    Very very very frustrating.
  • I have had exactly the same problem. I was using Ant Agent with Garmin Connect, but was still using Training Center to set up & upload workouts to my device. I switched to Garmin Express, it uploaded a workout once to my device, but now it will not transfer any more workouts from Garmin Connect to Garmin Express & to my device. I have called Customer Service (I previously tried the suggested actions earlier in this thread) and they advised re-installing Ant Agent again. It will not sync directly with Garmin Connect though - I still have to use Training Center, but it downloads activities from the device to Garmin Connect automatically.

I got the impression from the adviser on the telephone that Express still has a few glitches - we may need to just keep using Ant Agent & Training Center until they iron them out.
