Garmin Express fails to install - Windows 7

Hey all,

I've checked the forums for fixes, and have carried out the Windows Net installer fix, and reset the PC with no success.
It doesn't appear in services.msc whilst installing either.

But what happens is it says initalizing during installation (after setting the folders, etc), and then says "Downloading required..."

It then says failed.

The firewall is set to allow it.
Internet is fine as I'm posting right now..

Kind of bugging me.
Do I have to use this software to sync or is there a way to bypass it?

    Shane,

I've tried Internet Explorer. With my IE trials, I've hit "Run". I have also saved it to my Downloads file. From there I have tried double clicking to run, right click --> Run As Administrator. Still no dice. Any other ideas?

    @ Jallix

I've seen another thread where someone had some success with that. I'll try it tonight when I get home and see if it loads then.
  • What this installer needs is some feedback about what's going on. After spending a lot of time repairing and removing .net and other old stuff, I ended up turning off the Windows firewall. Finally I was able to install it. What the installer needs is some feedback about what it tries to do when failing. Failing because of network problems, without information about the cause, without informing the user that a properly working network is required, is not very user friendly.

Unfortunately after installing, it still doesn't work. UAC pops up with:
Program Name: A tool to aid in developing services for WindosNT
Program Location: "C:\Windows\SysWOW64\sc.exe" start "Garmin Core Update Service"

Accepting makes it happy for a couple of seconds, before UAC returns with the exact same request (seemingly forever). Denying results in program crashing with no more information that "An unexpected error …".

I am sorry for the troubles. This sounds like an issue with the Windows User Account Control (UAC) which allows Express to call on the Core Update Service or even allows the Core Update Service to run at all. As long as this is not a Work Computer see the instructions in the FAQ: What should I do if Garmin Express can't open because the Internet connection is being blocked?

If this doesn't resolve the issue use the instructions in the FAQ: Why am I receiving a user account control prompt after restarting the computer after using Garmin Express?

If you continue to have troubles please contact Product Support by phone where the issue can be more thoroughly looked into.

  • I've tried everything in this thread on both my newer laptop and older desktop. Neither one works.

TomTom looking pretty good right about now....
  • What doesn't work? What error messages, if any, are you getting? Difficult to give advice based on what you're said.

Note that only a very small percentage of Express users have issues, and mainly it's down to a problem at the user end. That of course doesn't help you but perhaps it explains why more detail is needed if you are to receive any meaningful help.
  • Ok. On my desktop, I download the installer.exe, agree to terms & conditions, it goes to install, and comes up with "Failed. Try again?". I've updated my .NET with the Microsoft repair tool, tried using "Run" instead of "Save" on both IE and Chrome.

On my Laptop: I've downloaded Garmin Express Installer, but when I go to install it on Windows 7 (even as administrator), the following window appears:
    __________________________________________________ _
GarminExpressInstaller.exe - Entry Point Not Found

The procedure entry point Direct3DCreate9Ex could not be
located in the dynamic link library d3d9.dll.

    __________________________________________________ __

This appears several times, then windows tells me Garmin Express has stopped working.

Happens with IE and Chrome, and also when choosing "Run" instead of "Save".
