Updates without functioning USB on GPS?

Hello,

My older Nuvi 760 has some issue with the USB connection. It can charge fine, and it detects when plugged into USB and tries to switch into MTP or whatever it's supposed to, but my computers never see a USB device. I've tried multiple ports on multiple computers with and without powered hubs..I could go on, in short, it's not a problem in my computers.

So, the question is, is there anyway I can get updates without that? I have a lifetime map sub on this, which this problem developed about 4 months after I paid for it so I was pretty upset (and was out of warranty by then). Anyway, I've read tht there's an xml file that can be placed on an SD card which would cause the card to look like the device. Can I generate this file using my device IDs and such? I don't think there's any way for me to extract it from the GPS since the GPS itself won't mount properly as storage.

I guess you don't have a back up of the files on your 760? If you do then the GarminDevice.xml file will be there. If not I don't believe there is another way to get it if you can't access your 760

If the Nuvi 760 doesn't go into Mass Storage mode any longer then yes it looks like the USB function in the device has gone bad. Since you have stated the device has been plugged into multiple computers with no change the device unfortunately can no longer be updated. One thing you didn't mention but I am assuming you tried is different USB cables. In some cases using different USB cables can resolve this issue.

Nope, I haven't done a lot with the GPS for several years, as it broke not long after going out of warranty, and I didn't know at the time I could back up the files on the device. Garmin wanted 100$ to fix the thing, and after having just given them money for the lifetime maps I couldn't get any more, I was 300$ into the GPS and I was pretty angry with the whole situation and wasn't giving them that much money to fix it. They weren't particularly sympathetic about it, and I haven't really been to keen on them since then.
