Garmin Express Install fails on Win 7 64 bit

Hi
I get the error message "Garmin Express has stopped working" when I try installing Garmin Express Installer. I don't have a previous copy installed.
I have .Net framework 4.5.1 (as well as other applications installed that require .Net.)
No progress bar. No other error message.

Things I have tried, each multiple times:
Re-installing .Net.
Running the .Net Repair tool.
Re-downloading/running the GE installer.

I have a new Fenix 2 and am not able to connect it to my pc.
Windows 7 64bit / SP1 :

Some Eventviewer info:
Application: GarminExpressInstaller.exe
Framework Version: v4.0.30319
Description: The process was terminated due to an unhandled exception. Exception Info: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException Stack:
at System.Windows.Media.Composition.DUCE Channel.SyncFlush()
at System.Windows.Media.MediaContext.NotifySyncModeStatus(Int32)...

What I find frustrating (to add to the frustration I already feel) is that in the reply from Garmin Support on this issue, most of the possible solutions for me to try start with: "Step 1: Open Garmin Express..."

Thanks for any possible advice.
  • Try downloading the .exe file to your PC, then right click it and select Run as administrator.

Hi, Thanks. I should have mentioned that on the list of things already tried. I'm afraid that did not solve the issue.

Try This, it worked for me

I posted this elsewhere but it may work for you too. I found a workaround that has let me get it installed, for better or for worse....

Anyway, the "Garmin Core Update Service" was stuck in a "Starting" status, not letting me stop it, start it, or otherwise. After trying numerous things and playing around I came up with a solution. Now this isn't my exact steps, cause I don't remember my exact steps; and they were not in a straight line.

    SO...
If the C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\Core Update Service folder is not on your computer, attempt the Garmin Express install. Then while it's installing, copy that folder so you have a copy of it when the install fails and it deletes itself. Now rename it to the original name so that folder "Core Update Service" now exists in the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin" directory.

    1. Close all Garmin Express install windows and Garmin processes in the task manager
    2. Start a Visual Studio Command Prompt in Administrator mode (I used visual studios 2010)
    3. Navigate to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\Core Update Service"
    4. Run: installutil Garmin.Cartography.MapUpdate.CoreService.exe
    5. Give it time to complete, mine took a minute.
    6. Now just run the GarminExpress.exe installer again, with any luck it will install just fine!

    Good Luck!

Hi. Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately the install dies right off the bat. The Garmin folder is not created under Prog Files.

I'm not sure why this made a difference (as I've not seen this before) but I relocated the installer file :
    from C:\Users\user\Downloads to the desktop
and the installer launched without issue.

    Thanks again for the suggestions.
  • Glad it's resolved, I'll close this thread.
