I have downloaded Garmin Express and a installed it on my laptop (windows 7 home premium) the icon is on my desktop but when i attempt to open the logo appears then i get a message Garmin Express can't open Internet connection is being blocked . Try disabling you fire wall and proxy settings and open garmin express again. I have tried this turning of windows fire wall as well a my anti virus soft ware, even tried uninstalling the AV but still get the same message
  • Thank you Mike! That did the trick ... but why was this necessary when we changed nothing on our system? :/

Anyway: Thanks for your help!! Great work!

    And for german Users:
Der Account-Name auf einem deutschen Win7 (und evtl. auch Win8) lautet "Netzwerkdienst". Also statt "Network Service" => "Netzwerkdienst".
  • In some cases depending on how the security software is setup along with User Account permissions can cause issues with what has been described in these posts. One thing you can try is forcing access to allow the Garmin Core Services to be allowed through to the internet. These steps may help correct some issues that you guys may be having.

    1. Press the Windows key+R
    2. Type "services.msc" and press Enter
    3. Locate and right-click Garmin Core Update Service
    4. Click Properties
    5. Click on Log On tab
    6. Select This account
    7. Type "Network Service" in the Account field
    8. Remove all text from both password fields
    9. Click Apply, then click OK on the next three prompts
    10. Right-click Garmin Core Update Service and Click Stop
    11. Right-click Garmin Core Update Service and Click Start

If you have tried the above steps and nothing changes, and you have logged in as an administrator account disabled security and nothing changes you may need to use a different machine to perform the map update. Some third party program or feature on your computer is blocking the Garmin Express software.

    Hi Mike,
I'm pleased to say this seems to have solved the issue with express connecting to the Internet. Once I get home tonight I will try connecting my devices. This has been very frustrating as I'm now onto my third PC (Windows 8.1) having failed to even initialise Express on my two XP laptops.
I had cancelled an order for a map update - if it runs once I connect the device I'll try re-ordering it.
It would have been nice if the software had just run.
Moderator - thanks for your and feedback.

  • Well it may not work for everyone having the issue as not all PCs are configured the same. I'm glad it worked for you and has resolved the issue on your PC. Might be interesting to see if your security software is the same as others having this problem :)

I use Windows 7 Firewall (64 bit) along with AVG free.
  • Hello Mike,
It worked for me as well.
Just a quick remark, I had to type the full account name: "NT AUTHORITY\NetworkService".
    Thank you very much

the procedure in post #22 worked for me - although with a wrinkle

Garmin Express didn't work one day with the same error message noted in other posts, i.e. internet connection blocked. I don't recall making any changes or installing new software since the last successful Express session. I tried downloading Express, removing the existing version and installing Express again. Same result. At all times I could see the GPS device a Nuvi 50 in Windows Explorer. Garmin web site MyDashboard would find the device. Disabling NIS firewall and anti-virus made no difference.

I followed post #22 but on the last step, to restart Garmin Core Services, I got an error message that there wasn't a timely response. When I right clicked again Garmin Core services had "start" grayed out, but "stop" available. On a chance I started Express again ... and it worked! Go figure?

I could then update the Nuvi 50 and a second device Nuvi 2455

I've an old HP 6730s laptop. Vista Business up to date. Norton Internet Security up to date.

EDIT: I just tried running Basecamp and got an error that MSVCR90.dll is missing. Related to my Express problems, I wonder?

I do not believe the two issues are related. The issue with BaseCamp is easy to fix and shouldn't happen with version 4.3.3. Uninstall BaseCamp then navigate to C:\ProgramFiles (x86)\Garmin\ and delete the BaseCamp folder then reinstall BaseCamp from the website.

    BaseCamp version 4.3.3:

    Thanks for the help
I corrected the problem before seeing your message.
First tried an install of BC 433 "overtop" the earlier version - no joy.
I then tried changing the name of the Basecamp folder and installed BC 433. I didn't do an uninstall. Problem solved. And all the old waypoints and routes appeared, which was unexpected but much appreciate.

  • Is Windows Defender running? That can also block downloads.

Also if you're trying over wifi try direct cabling to your router/modem.

The problem will invariably be within your system somewhere.

I was ready to return my Edge 1000 until I tried the procedure in post #22. It worked fine for me

I can now update my device.

Thanks for posting the work around to this problem.

The steps in post 22 worked for mine. Was about ready to give up on this. Other software hasn't caused these difficulties. Thanks for the tip.
