Updating maps with Garmin Express on my new NUVI and it crashed.

Hello,
I'm new to the forum.
I just purchased a Garmin NUVI.
I have Windows XP on my laptop, and it was necessary for me to call Garmin customer support to get Express installed.

I updated the software on my NUVI using Express, but last night, I was trying to update the MAPS.
It got to about 87% complete, then it had a Windows error.
It ran for a solid 2.5 hours before it crashed.

I'm wondering if maybe I didn't have enough space on my laptop, or maybe the battery in the NUVI
became weak.
When the NUVI is hooked to a computer through the USB port, does the USB port supply power to the NUVI?

Please refrain from the Switch to another operating system advice.
My laptop is a hand me down, and I mainly use it for Internet access.
It still works, so I don't see a reason to upgrade at this time.
I know, I will eventually have to upgrade, but I'm going to use it as long as I can.

Thanks for any info.
  • Current versions of Express work with XP so I doubt that's the issue. I assume you had your laptop plugged into the mains, otherwise it could very well have been a battery issue. IIRC your PC needs around 13Gb of disk space to do a map update, so if you don't have that it could have been the problem. Diagnosing issues like this though is difficult.

Out of interest which nuvi do you have? Which map are you trying to update?

And yes, your nuvi gets its power from the USB port when connected.
  • Good news, I'll close this thread then.
