Garmin registration problem

Former Member

Just bought NUVI 2797 based on Which recommendation for simplicity. After only a few hours I am getting very frustrated. Every time I try to register the product I am told I need to download Garmin Express. When I try to load this it tells me to disable my firewall - this is really quite unacceptable nowadays, I do not want to compromise my overall security. I did try disabling for a moment, but got the same message, so enabled again. It suggests my "Proxy settings" may be wrong - I don't have a degree in computer science, I am not on a network, I should not have to do this sort of messing around!!! I don't see why this program should require me to contact my ISP - nothing else does, I bought it because I was lead to believe it was simple to use - but I can't even register it online...........:mad::mad:

Is this site run by Garmin?
Tempted to return to vendor as not fit for purpose & advise "Which" also - can anyone help? (I do like the clear and large screen - but would prefer it if everything worked properly!!)
  • Well errors of this sort are rare and invariably due to an issue with the users PC. Which OS are you using? Are you trying to work over wifi? Need more info to be able to understand exactly what you're trying to do and the error messages you're getting.

Incidentally I have three nuvis and have never had any issues with registering, updating etc.
  • Well thanks for the screenshot but the error message is quite clear, so difficult to know what else to advise ... something in your system is blocking Express. Are you able to use another browser just to confirm it's not browser related?

The Garmin Express team check in here quite frequently and may be able to advise further.
  • Generally it is but like any PC you can have issues with certain devices/programs ... as I said, unsure what is happening here but the Express team should be able to help, but probably not until tomorrow. Your device will still work though so I'd wait to register etc until they provide some additional help.

This issue is very difficult to troubleshoot as it relates to settings or security software on the computer. This could also be some other software not security related that may be conflicting with the Garmin Express program. I would recommend that you contact support as they can remotely connect your computer to see if there is anything that can be done. There may be some settings changes they can do or try to see what programs may be running that could be interfering with the communication to the Garmin servers.
