Connection problems

My apologies if this is the wrong forum for this, it was no other ones seemed appropriate for these issues.

I have a Garmin Colorado 400i. Over the last year or so, it's had a couple issues. The basemap no longer appears, although my topo map on the SD card does. I also can not change profiles. I've tried doing a factory reset with no effect. I also have tried Garmin Express in the hopes that an update/rewrite of the firmware may help, but Express does not detect the device. Windows does, but says I should format the drive. I tried doing the diagnostic which shows that the ROM fails the test. I also tried this http://garmincolorado.wikispaces.com/Miscellaneous#toc12 but it says there's no usb device available.

Any suggestions? It may be a hardware issue, but, I wonder if the firmware is corrupted. If I can reinstall it, that may help. However, I cannot find any other ways of doing so manually.

Thanks for any help!

This forum is primarily for Garmin Express issues but think I can help with the Colorado. It sounds like there is some corrupt data on the device. I suggest you delete the Garmindevice.xml file from inside the Garmin folder on the device then run a check disk on the internal memory. The only way to reload the basmap is for you to contact Garmin Product Support (US) 800.800.1020. They can do a remote session with you and send you the basemap file.

    Delete Garmindevice.xml:

    1. Connect the GPS to the computer.
    2. Open your My Computer icon.
    3. Open the Garmin icon.
    4. Open the Garmin folder.
    5. Locate the GarminDevice.xml file.
    6. RIGHT Click on it and choose DELETE.
    7. Disconnect the GPS from your computer and turn it off.
    8. Connect the GPS to your computer again.

See the FAQ: How do I run a check disk or disk utility on my Garmin mass storage device?

Once you complete the check disk and the Colorado as a chance to generate a new GarminDevice.xml file it should be recognized by Express.

Sorry, reading my post again, I wasn't too clear about this part. Windows is basically not able to read the device when connected so I cannot get to or delete any files. It does assign two drive letters though (no SD card is in the GPS) so I tried running chkdsk.

    The first drive says

    C:\Users\Mike>chkdsk n: /f
The type of the file system is FAT32.
An error occurred while reading the file allocation table (FAT 1).
There are no readable file allocation tables (FAT).

    The second drive just says

    C:\Users\Mike>chkdsk o: /f
Cannot open volume for direct access.

It *has* asked in the past if I want to format the drive. Don't know if that's suggested or not.

It seems that the Colorado has some major corruption issues. I would recommend that you do contact support directly as previously indicated so a remote session can be setup to try and communicate with the device. When and if you do contact support at 800-800-1020 make sure you have the Colorado a high speed internet connection and USB cable handy to try and get the Colorado fixed.
