I've just purchased this new device and got it working, and showing maps etc. But when I re-connected it to Garmin Express I found the device's memory bar was yellow and not green, and that the firmware version didn't match the device. Version 4.0 on GE/PC. The device says it has firmware version 3.05.06 installed and I got confused and opted to reinstall both maps and firmware. Having done this the device lost all the maps and shows around 9% memory used with a green bar in GE. I've since loaded mapupdater nd this didn't work and I got errors on both applications. Can some one please help with some basic tips, and easy instructions. Thanks
Well Express can get confused so are you sure 4.3 hasn't been installed? Check on the device itself rather than rely on Express. In any case I recommend that you disconnect your GPS from your PC, then delete it from Express and associate it. It should then report your device correctly.
Once it does try reinstalling the maps. Note Express updates maps so if your GPS came with the latest maps already installed they can't be updated. Note first just check the maps aren't simply 'deselected'. Look under Settings, Map & Vehicle, myMaps ... if they show there then they're installed, just ensure the box next to them is checked.
Incidentally where you say 'The device says it has firmware version 3.05.06' you're looking at the GPS firmware, not the software version that is installed and which Express updates.
This is slightly confusing as Express normally won't go ahead with the map update until the software has updated, and you would normally get a pop up saying something along the lines of please disconnect and reboot your nuvi so the software update can complete then reconnect your device. When you do this you get a message on the nuvi saying loader loading and the software is then installed.
Are you seeing any of that?
I assume you didn't back up your nuvi before attempting all this?
If you backed up the device using Express that just backs up user data not maps. If there are no maps listed when you look at myMaps then you have no maps and that would tie in with only 9% memory usage.
I'm not sure what's happening with Express but suggest for the moment you concentrate on getting the device software up to date. Run Garmins WebUpdater program and see if that will successfully update your nuvi to 4.3. Report back with what happens when you try that.
Don't get confused between GPS firmware versions and the nuvis ... They will be 4.0 etc.
I'm not sure what could have gone wrong but given that WebUpdater also failed I suspect it's a PC issue. Hopefully the Express team will be along shortly with a few ideas.
