Garmin Express will not find my device, but I can see it and edit in my computer

I have a nuvi that has an update available. When I plug my nuvi into my laptop it switches on. I can see it under my computer. However express will not recognise the device. Have tried all the usb ports as well as trying another computer, still the same problem. Can only conclude the problem is with express. What can be done??
