Problems updating to CN NA 2015.10

Have a Zumo 550 went to update from 2014.40 to 2015.10 and Garmin Express (mewest version (3.2.4.0)
Constantly gives an ERROR when trying to update to GPS and,or pc.

Called support and found that there is a problem - just downloaded 3.2.4.0 and STILL ERROR,

Now I have NO MAP in my Zumo other than the basemap.

HELP!!!!!
  • There was (is?) a problem with the Aus & NZ maps, not sure if it's been resolved yet, one of the Express team should be along shortly and they should know.

There is still a problem with the AUNZ 2015.10 maps.

I received my 2497LMT on Thursday. Garmin Express updated the unit to the latest firmware but failed downloading the 2015.10 maps. It also deleted the maps that came with the device leaving me with just the basemap. So now I have a fairly useless unit.

I've also tried GarminMapUpdater which also fails. It gets to ~83% then crashes the app. When trying to use GMU again it scans the existing downloaded fils and crashed again. If I delete those files it will redownload to ~83% and crash again.

I have tried at home on my Windows 8.1u Po laptop with GE and GMU. Also tried at work on a Windows 7 Pro with GE and GMU. Both have the same outcome.

I called AU support and spoke to Emmanuel who requested logs and screenshots which I sent though. He said he escalated it to a specialist in Sydney. I've not heard anything since.

I did find that in Garmin Express you can change the map download options for the PC maps which worked. So to be able to use your device you can use Base Camp to copy those maps. Not all features are available that way though, such as Junction View.

    Fingers crossed it gets fixed.

Exactly the same here. Got my Nuvi3597 yesterday, unpacked, connected : it was possible to perform only the device updates.
If I try to update the maps with Express, I always get the same error "There was a problem downloading the update. Please try again. If you continue to experience problems, contact Garmin..." . Was able to install the map in my laptops only (Australia and NZ 2015.10).

Tried on three different PCs : one with Windows 8.1, one with Windows 7, one with XPsp3. Tried two different internet connections.

Same issues with the GarminMapUpdater: it proceeds for a while, then it crashes. Same in all the computers.

Same error with a nuvi 3597LMT using both GE and GMU. Don't hold your breath waiting for a reply from Sydney! They shouldn't be in charge of running a bath let alone Garmin support.
  • Guess you didn't back up your device before updating, or even at any time then, otherwise you could simply copy the old map files back ...

Call AU support again and explain what's happening, they should be able to resolve this for you and get your device working again, even if it's with the previous map until the issue with this map is fixed.

Where are you Hotmilo? There's excellent free Open Project maps for most countries that will get you going in the meantime. The extra map does not interfere with the updating of the Garmin map. In the case of the NZ Open GPS Project map it's updated weekly, free, and far more up to date than the City Navigator Aust/NZ map that takes about a year to get even major new roads added. Let us know a country and we may be able to help.

We shouldn't have to backup our devices before we update. The update process should be smart enough to check that all of the required files have been downloaded and their checksums verified before any files on the device are removed.

In my case I didn't backup the device myself as it was brand new out of the box. I didn't have any of my own data on it, so didn't feel the need to back it up. Garmin Express did perform a backup itself but it only contains personal data, some gpx and db files, no maps. I have performed a backup on my other device "Nuvi 40" and it hasn't backed up the maps either. Garmin Express even says under the "Backup" section "Backup your saved places, waypoints and routes."

How can we get our devices completely backed up using Garmin software? The only way I know how to is to copy the .System folder. I've since found that the only way to access the .System folder on newer devices is to enter the developer settings and switch the device from MTP mode to Mass Storage mode. Not something the average user would know how to do.
  • Hi KiwiGPS,

    I'm from Perth WA, Australia.
Will be much appreciated if you send me the link to get the gps "Temporary" working again.
    Thanks

I was able to get the 2015.10 maps installed via Basecamp as a band-aid fix. You get the new map but miss out on Junction View and other GPS specific files such as ASR which has something to do with Voice Control. The PC maps downloaded fine for me in Garmin Express which adds them to Basecamp. You can then send the 2015.10 maps to your GPS from Basecamp. To download the Computer maps do this:

    Open Garmin Express.
Under "Map Update" select "Show Details"
    Click "Advanced Options"
Change the dropdown box to "Device & Computer" or just "Computer Only" as the device download fails anyway.
    Then click "Install Now"

Once the download of the computer maps finishes open Basecamp. You should see the 2015.10 maps. When you have your device plugged in you should be able to click on the "Maps" menu item and select "Install Maps" where you can send them to your device.

Hopefully that works for you until they fix the device maps download.

No you shouldn't, but as a long term PC user a prudent step is always to back up anytime you update/change anything on ANY device. Things occasionally go wrong and a back up has saved me on numerous occasions, although only needed a back up once for a Garmin error.

As for the average user, they probably don't know how to back up their smart phone or do a system restore. Sometimes you have to do a bit of work to protect your data. With Express of course you can always opt to download the maps to your PC as a back up, so no need to mess about with the .system folder unless you want to. I do both.

    I'll PM you Hotmilo.

Same here, the Aust/NZ map does not install to my W8.1 computer (using Express and the option of sending to the computer only) using a nuvi 2797 - here's the error after about 5 seconds:

Today, same problem. No way to update the maps.

Any chance to get it sorted out ?
