Nuvi 42 map update

I recently installed Garmin Express and let it update my newly purchased Nuvi 42. It downloaded map set called Europe complete, or something to that effect, but when it tried to install it was unable due to lack of memory. So, I went out and bough 8GB microSD, and tried again, but now it downloads and installed only "Central Europe" (I currently live in Vienna, but will be moving to Bulgaria at the end of the month, so I need all of Europe. Is there some way to get it to install the complete Europe maps? (I assume the file is still somewhere on my computer - it took several hours to download due to poor internet service at my location.)
  • You would need to reinstall the maps with the addition on the microSD card in the device.

How do I reinstall maps or change coverage using Garmin Express?
  • I am not able to "Click Change Regions to install a different region." Garmin Express only allows me to reinstall "Central Europe Region 2014.40"
  • Are you looking at the Install tab or the Device tab? On the Device tab you should see Reinstall or Change Map, Change Regions etc
  • The reinstall or change map option is only available after installing the current map region (Central Europe 2014.40) to the device. To change coverage:

    • Complete the 2014.40 Central Europe update
    • Disconnect the nuvi and turn it on
    • Close Garmin Express on your computer
    • Reopen Garmin Express and attach the nuvi
    • Click the Device tab in Express
    • Click Change Regions to select a different region option

  • Tried your 4 steps, Sam, but still do not see how I can select different map/region. See attached screenshot.
  • Out of curiosity, I looked in your myGarmin account at your registered devices, and I have discovered why this prompt does not appear for you. Central Europe is the largest region unlocked to your nuvi 42. Your nuvi 42 was preloaded with Central Europe, so it doesn't know to unlock the full coverage of Europe.

You would need to purchase a supplemental download or pre-programmed SD card if you want to add any regions outside of Central Europe. We do sell European models with full Europe maps preloaded, so you may look into exchanging your device back to the store for one of those models.

  • No, sorry, I'm not going to buy anything else. I bought this unit in Europe, for Europe, and it has let me down in Portugal last week, and looks like it will be useless in Bulgaria when I go at the end of the month. Looks like I will return it to Saturn as defective.
  • Well you bought a unit loaded with maps for Central Europe it seems. So it's not defective! You just should have bought one that had the map coverage you require.
