Paid for Lifecycle Updater Only to Find No Updates Were Available (Ever)

I've had my old nuvi 300 for some time now and was thinking of replacing it... but thought I'd just give it one more update before I did.

In 2011 I purchased the Garmin Lifetime Updater for my 300 and ever since have had to put up with the perpetual and uncontrollable downloads every time I logged onto my PC (even on a restart!).

I was highly annoyed to be told today that I needed to change my OS from XP in order to obtain any more downloads, despite the web pages saying XP was within the Tech Specs. If that wasn't annoying enough, I've just found out that the UK website runs a list of the most recent updates for your device and, guess what, the last updated for the 300 was in 2009, 2 years after Garmin took £74.99 from me (Order Number: 100544519083). I wondered why I'd been going across fields and flying across rivers...

Is that good business practice to sell the promise of updates where none are available?

And try getting in contact with Tech Support... it feels like it's deliberately intended to obfuscate; it sends you in circles, gives you dropdown menus with no real choices and then sends you back to the same page, but this time in French! If it isn't deliberate then it's very worrying that a tech company could be so incompetent.

Don't think my next SatNav will be a Garmin...
  • If by lifetime updater you mean lifetime map updates these are released around every 3 months. What you may be talking about are firmware updates. These are released as required. As yours is an older nuvi I wouldn't expect any recent updates as the software would have been stable a while ago.

I have looked into your account and pulled up the information on your Nuvi 300. The current maps you have unlocked to your device are the 2012.30. The device does have Lifetime mapping associated with it. The current mapping of Europe is the 2014.40. Your device can update to newer mapswhen ever a mapping version is released.

The statement on Express indicating that XP is "Ending Soon". This is what is going to happen as XP support has already been stopped by Microsoft. The current version of Express software should be able to provide you with a map update for your device. Moving forward though as the notification indicates future releases of Garmin Express will not work on XP machines.

Now the update you referred to as the last release in 2009 was not a map update. SUSSAMB is correct the update you were talking about is the Firmware or operating system software of the device.
