Garmin express error when uploading activities from Edge 500

I have an Edge 500 (software version 3.3.0) & Garmin Express 3.1.8.0.

Until a couple of days ago activities always uploaded without any problem to Garmin Connect. No activities from the last few days will successfully upload despite multiple attempts over several days. I have checked your FAQ and can confirm that the Garmin Core Update Service is running. I have tired manual uploading and uploading via the Communicator Plug-in buts these also don't work although they too have always worked in the past.

The Express error is "There was a problem communicating with the Garmin servers. Please try again later."

I can upload these same activities to Strava without any problem!!

It seems I'm not the only one having this problem but I haven't been able to find a solution.

Please tell me how to fix this.

I found a solution that has got my Edge uploading again. Unfortunately any activities that you have on the Edge will be lost.

    Do a master reset on the device as detailed here : https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={af76b980-cd31-11e0-cf56-000000000000}

Don't forget to save your settings as described so you can restore them after the reset.

Garmin Express seems to remember that you have activities that haven't been uploaded even though they will no longer be on the Edge after the reset.
Consequently I uninstalled Express from my PC, restarted my PC and did a clean install of Express.

I recorded a new short activity on the Edge and it uploaded with no problem :-)

I saved the fit files of the activities that would not upload and tried to upload them manually but that still doesn't work. I can only assume there is something corrupted in them. I will try to investigate further.

    Hope that helps someone.

Since latest Garmin problems around a third of my .fit files no longer upload.
I think this is because I use my Edge 800 on 2 different bikes and switch between the two bike profiles on the device.

Anyway, here's how to fix things (without losing any data):

If you get "There was a problem communicating with the Garmin servers. Please try again later." it is most likely that Garmin can't read their own files. To fix this, use the Garmin online fit repair tool http://garmin.kiesewetter.nl/

    1. Click Browse for the broken .fit file.
    2. Click Convert to _autofix.fit file.
    3. Save the fixed .fit file somewhere.
    4. Rename the broken file on your device to .old or something, as a backup.
    5. Copy the fixed .fit file back to your device and rename it to the original filename.
    6. Sync Away...

If you get the problem that Garmin Express tries to upload a .fit file that is no longer on the device:

    1. Open Garmin Express
    2. Click Device at the top
    3. Click Delete Device from Express
    4. Choose Keep In Garmin Connect and hit Confirm
    5. Add your device back to Express and log in again - any cached files should be gone.
