no device found in Garmin Express (3598)

well I am another disappointed Garmin user. just bought a 3598 and managed to install garmin express (several times!) and then 'register my device' and spent 4 hours getting nowhere. just going round in circles on the website.

tried every usb port, shutting down and restarting, updating everything, cleaning the system and hard drive.....NOTHING just a spinning pattern and no device attached!

when I rang customer support they told me they do not support Explorer or Safari running on a PC.
so tried BOTH chrome and firefox and NOTHING.

Even the phone link is no good because I have an IPhone and that is not supported

Installed every bit of additional driver and software I could find on the garmin website with just rising frustration.......

feel like taking the thing back and never hearing the name Garmin again.

looking on the net, this software is s big issue, and I dont like being taken for a ride which is why I did not buy another TOMTOM.
  • Not sure why support told you IE isn't supported, I've used it ever since buying Garmins and it works fine. Try the tips here http://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId=%7Be908ee90-c6c1-11e1-dcef-000000000000%7D
  • Well it's possible the device is faulty but in the vast majority of cases it's an issue with the users PC. You really need to work through the FAQ to see if any of the problems mentioned is the cause. Be careful just 'trying another lead' as some leads will not work, since not all USB leads are the same.

I've had numerous Garmins and they've all connected from day one.

Just to be clear, is your GPS not even showing in Explorer?
  • Well the Express team frequent this forum regularly, though perhaps not so much over the weekend. One of them should be able to help more.

    GPS/satnav ... guess you're in UK?

Does your satnav show in Explorer when it's connected?
  • Ranting won't help, but it does sound like you may have a faulty device or cable if it's not even showing in Explorer and you've followed the steps in the FAQ. Afraid even in this 'modern world' electronic devices occasionally fail.
  • The Nuvi 3598LMTD is a MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) device by default so your computer will need to meet the minimum requirements, which is basically having Windows Media Player 11 installed. Please make sure the USB cable is connected to the USB port directly on the back of the Nuvi. Do not connect the USB cable to any type of vehicle mount.

What is MTP mode and which automotive devices use it?
