Turn off auto update of firware

I've recently rolled back my Edge 810 firmware from V2.9 to V2.8 to get it to work properly with connect.
Does anyone know how to disable the automatic firmware update with Garmin express as it's just set it back to the newest (2.9) and now i have the original problem again.
Many thanks
  • Unfortunately there is not a way to disable the automatic firmware update through Express. We are not aware of any issues with the 2.9 firmware update for the Edge 810. If you could please provide more details about the issues your experiencing we would be happy to help you resolve them.

Shane, I am no longer getting elevation data from my fenix 2 on garmin connect since the most recent garmin express update.
  • I submitted and issue to Garmin Support on automatic firmware updating being NG. They replied with the following,

"""If the Express program keeps updating your unit then you'll have to manually upload the activities to Garmin Connect and not use Express. Can you please tell me if you're using the new Modern View or Classic View? If you're using the Modern View you'll have to open the Activities page and select Upload from the upper right corner. """

This doesn't address the fact the activities upload and the device's software is updated (gupdate.gcd copied to the Garmin directory on 500s and 705s) automatically whenever I connect a device, whether or not GE is open or I have the GC website open in a browser. Seems like I'd have to uninstall GE to get it to quit and simply do everything manually, which is probably simpler, easier, less problematic and better in every way I can think of over what GE is doing.

Update: Yesterday I downloaded a new version of GE (3.1.8.0) and rebooted my PC. The GE icon no longer appears in the Task Bar. When I connected my 705, the new activity uploaded automatically to GC with no notification showing on my PC. No attempt was made to update the software on my 705, that is no gupdate.gcd file was copied to the Garmin folder on the 705. I then started GE. It showed that an update was available but did not automatically update the device.

Then, I closed GE, unplugged the 705 and plugged in the 500. There were no new activities on the 500 to be uploaded but GE attempted to update the firmware and copied a new gupdate.gcd file to the Garmin directory on the 500 without any notifications.

So, it did not attempt to update the 705 but it did attempt to update the 500. And to further the intrigue, the GE icon is now showing in the Task Bar again.

My Edge 810 worked fine in both Connect and training center under firmware v2.8. When express updated it 2.9 it stopped working completely. Whenever I try to upload a ride I get a message about the servers having issues and the unit became invisible to training center.
Rolled it back to 2.8 and all is ok, except I cant upload to connect.
Obviously connect is the better option but it doesnt seem to work properly with v2.9(As many posts on here have mentioned the same problem)
  • Further update: I uninstalled GE from my computer and was subsequently able to manually upload activities from my devices to Modern GC. Unfortunately, I don't see any way to manually download course from GC to a device.

So, if you want to maintain control over what gets up/downloaded to which account/device (and keep a specific version of firmware on your device) with Modern GC, you can uninstall GE. You won't be able to download courses.

If you want to download courses from GC Modern, it looks like you're stuck with GE and whatever it does in the background.
