Brand new nuvi 50LM -- No Proximity Points setting

Just purchased new Nuvi 50LM. Proceeded to register new device and downloaded latest software and Map files using Garmin Express.
I note that there is NO Proximity Points setting after selecting the settings tab. Per owners manual and several tutorials, I should have a setting
option for Proximity Points. ( I never checked before performing software / Map updates. ) Could the Garmin Express downloads have corrupted
something, or am I being downright stupid ???
  • You would need to add custom POI's with proximity alerts (using POI Loader) in order for that option to be enabled.

Hmmmmm ....... I was under the impression ( from reading advertising for the 50LM ) that red light camera info came pre-loaded. Am I wrong ? Will have to go back and review what I have read.
  • You may be right about that .... never looked at that model so I don't know. Are your getting RLC alerts? If you know of some locations that have RLC, you could test it in simulation mode.
  • I assume you didn't back up your nuvi before updating it etc?

Is it a UK model? If so it would have had speed cameras etc on it. Is the POI folder now empty? If so Express may well have deleted them.

    SUSSAMB .........

You are correct, no backup before the update. Being new to gps, was not aware of need to do so. This is a US model, lower 49 states. According to advertising claims, should have been pre loaded with camera info, but none seen after downloading latest updates from Garmin. I proceeded to download POILoader from Garmin, and installed one of the free custom POIs for safety cameras found on the net. I now have the Proximity Points option under settings.

My only conclusion is that the latest MAP download from Garmin deleted any camera POIs that might have been on the original.

I also assume that any future Map download will remove the custom POIs just installed. Is that a valid assumption ?????

    Thanks for the help !!!
  • I have no idea whether US ones come with files that like pre-loaded ... but in any case Express does not normally remove them, at least it never has on any of my nuvis.

Here is the link to the 50LM product page: nuvi 50LM

It doesn't mention that the US model 50LM comes with Speed Cameras. Do you happen to have a link to the advertisement (or name of the store), so we can get that information corrected?

Sam at Garmin Express Customer Care .......

I will have to fall on my sword on this one. I reviewed my research for the 50LM, and found NO advertised claims for speed camera data base being pre-loaded on the U.S. version. I did, however, look at a number of online reviews that mentioned the speed camera data base being preloaded. I assumed this would be the case for my device. Let me guess : Some international versions come preloaded, but not the U.S. version. Would this be about right ?

You are correct. Speed Cameras do not come preloaded on North American models. They are most prevalent on models sold in Europe.
